Free Association (An Epic Poem of Forgettable Magnitude)
Love is free
Life is free
Death is free
Why shouldn’t association be?
Racecarts, figs, murk and haze
Balloons and goats
And silhouettes on trolleys
Growing towards your moon
The shade is rising
The rain pours into my heart
Sinking the Titanic all over again
Just to make Gilligan laugh
I blew a trumpet announcing my arrival
But no one heard
Perhaps because the trumpet was imaginary
Or maybe because the people were
The sun was slithering
Snaking in the grass
I tried to hide in a keg
But became disgusted
Milk and raisins were falling on my head
Peering at the tiny soldiers
Forming ranks within my scalp
Digging trenches in the dandruff
Burnt matches all on file
Lining up to be recarded
And join again the herd
That I count as I fall asleep
Allusions whispered of Norsemen with beards
But it was only Norman with beds
I shooed him
He sued me
Judy (the judge) gave me parole
On pain of death
Electrodes were implanted in my bath
To shock me should I resist?
But the barn stole the cake
And indeed the money that Norman didn’t take
Alimony to livestock
To prove they came from me
But I burnt it with the resurrected matches
Who cried at being included?
I suppose I should have called first
But it was awfully late for such a thing
And if the sky was painted
What was it painted on?
Moon beams and wood shine
Dark thoughts and cheerful nonsense
Cynicality and technicalities
Postponed the opening of the museum
