I bought the november issue of shonen jump, and was a lil' disappionted...was YUGIOH written for kids!? anyway RK, naruto and one piece are good..one piece was funny! i epected stuff from toriyama and yuyu hakusho, but yu gi oh? if you dont know what i mean just pick up the issue. thhen again its rated t for teens..of course i noticed after i got home...

I like Shonen Jump as well. So much so, in fact, I started a thread with the title...

well i did like it... only i can't get another one... The reason I can't is what's really dispionting

I realise that each of us have differences in what we consider acceptable (and it varries a bunch by our own personal convictions), but I don't see what the problem is, then again I've got about 6 issues of Shonen here and I think I've seen Yu-Gi-Oh as being one of the tamer ones most of the time.

BTW, I picked up vol1 of One Piece because I liked it so much... it's got some violent parts as well as a bit of drinking and smoking (they are pirates after all) the language isn't bad that I remember though, which is a good thing.

I love shonen Jump, because it has some many mangas in just one complete magazine; however, I like NewType magazine better. ^^ Still I like Shonen Jump, it has One Piece, Shaman King, Yu Yu Hakusho, and the new manga that is in it Hikaru no Go, which is great by the way. But I think Shonen Jump could do better. They should put Prince of Tennis in it ,or Fruit Baskets.

Prince of Tennis would provide interesting variety, but I think Fruits Basket isn't exactly shonen. Certainly not in the vien of Shonen Jump's other comics. But that's just my assorted currencies.

well all i need is one piece ziods and RK (lthough i dont think my mom would like RK..) shonen ump wasa good way to be "introduced to manga, in my case. ill jump get the graphic novels of what i wnt instead

^^; I think the Yugioh manga looks creepy and weird. And you are right uc pseudonym, Fruit Basket isn't exactly shonen. o.o I just like Fruits Basket.

Besides the fact that Fruits Basket is, I believe, considered shojo, Tokyopop, not Viz, is the company that owns its rights.

I'm interested to see how well Hikaru no Go will catch on in the U.S.

Yes, it will be interesting to see how that goes. I'm witholding judgement at the moment. But let me put it this way: if there's going to be a manga with no action or fighting, the character development better be incredible.

At the moment, I'm strongly disliking Sai. No one should be that obsessed. No male should look that female. No one should be without any apparent feet.

Hmmmm. Wasn't Sai supposed to have been born during a dynasty where those were the popular clothing and hair styles?
Well, anyway, I read somewhere that it does have good character development or at least good enough development to attract the attention of people who were not big fans of the game Go(like me, for example ).

I would subscribe to Jump if I could afford it, all for the sake of One Piece. That is a great manga. Few cuss words (although slightly odd that a seven-year-old Luffy would know the language he does in volume one--then again, he does hang out with pirates), though, as stated before, there is drinking and violence.

Stay away from volume one if a character getting their arm bitten off would bother you.




Anyway, I don't know a whole lot abot Shonen Jump to be having this conversation but I do know One Piece a bit. So yeah, a great manga, like I said!

I don't think so.
It's only for the U.S. and Canada.

You would probably be able to import the graphic novels though.

By that same line of thinking, then it would be acceptable to solve your issues by taking a sharp sword and slicing and dicing anyone who gets in your way too.....

No, rather this is an issue of it being more acceptable to see those things presented.... there should be an additional maturity to those people (the "teen" and up croud) who should know enough to tell right from wrong and act properly, rather than playing "monkey-see, monkey do" and following every example they see.

"Teens" should be less impressionable than a younger audience is (since at this point most of your moral base should be somewhat intact).

Take a movie like Shadowlands (Anthony Hopkins... story of C.S. Lewis meeting his wife).... it's rated PG, yet there is no offensive content in that movie, fowl language, nudity, etc.... but the themes and concepts in the movie are "over the head" or too complex for younger viewers, this is why it doesn't get a "G" rating.

This is also one of the main reasons why the arguments that games like GTA causing kids ("teens," though they shouldn't have been playing a game with a "M" rating anyway) to go out and shoot cars, beat up people, etc. In those cases it's not Rockstar's fault that the kids invovled had no moral base, or a faulty one.

My niece is a little over 2 years old... my sister and brother-in-law have found they now have to watch their language around their daughter because she's starting to "pick up" on those things.... a "teen" who uses that language usually does so because he/she thinks it's "cool" or the thing to do... my niece doesn't have that level of comprehension... he's just paroting her parents.

yeah i see what you mean... maturity... even if i do read manga with a little foul language i won't start saying it... maybe a seven year old would.. (IMO cussing just makes the other guy sound like a fool ) But still i dont really like it

i want to get the weekly shonen jump from japan to see what the new cool manga in japan currently is but i havent seen a company online that is selling subscriptions or single issues.

A word on "bad language" (an issue I don't want to get into too heavily). It does rub off on you. You may not realize it at first, but it subconsciously absorbs in. I know in my situation I'm around a lot of people who cuss up a storm, and there are times when I have to make a conscious effort to not do the same.

I've found that the language (at least in One Piece) has improved as the series continues. And Hikaru no Go has NO language so far.

And about Yu-Gi-Oh: the manga they're running is kind of the equivalent of season one (which wasn't aired in the US), so it's darker and a bit more perverted than what it'll be later on. I think the main reason they're printing it is the advertising factor of the name, not because it's the best manga to be marketing to kids.

I agree that there hasn't seemed to be as much mild profanity in the past few issues as there has been in the past.
I'm not sure whether that's deliberate or not on the part of Viz...

It will be interesting though so see what Hikaru no Go is rated when it comes out in graphic novel form since so far there hasn't been anything that would garner a T rating(with the possible exception of the bloodstains on the board, but that's pretty iffy) like the other SJ mangas although we are very early into the series.

I'm a subscriber to Shonen Jump, and it does have some really great manga. However, that doesn't mean there aren't some things to watch out for.

Yu-Gi-Oh!
This manga was NOT written for little kids. Some chapters are very dark, and the whole story line (or the part that's running in the US SJ as of right now) is centered around Kaiba's plots to kill Yugi for defeating him in a prior duel. There are a few sexual references, some strange ones which involve Honda (Tristan)'s nephew, who's only a toddler, hitting on Anzu (Téa) and making crude remarks or gestures. Jonouchi (Joey) curses a lot. Also, a lot of emphasis is put on "The heart of the cards" like a supernatural or spiritual force. It's a good manga overall, and pretty funny in some parts, but don't mistake it for a Pokémon parallel.

Once Piece
Hardly any problems with this one... very little swearing, moderate violence (but in slapstick comical way) and occasionally blood. This manga's really funny, I quite enjoy it.

Naruto
This one's good as well, but be warned that there is a lot of violence as the whole story is about ninjas and occult ninja techniques. The characters use chakra, or spiritual forces to perform moves and magical illusions, but the themes for the story are about good vs. evil, friendship, loyalty, and perserverance. One of the male characters both dresses and looks like a girl, but does nothing openly homosexual besides the aforementioned cross-dressing.

Dragonball Z
I came into this story while it was already far underway, so I can't say too much about it. The same old good vs. evil, action story with supernatural powers and karate-type moves. A lot of Buddhist references are in there, as well as futuristic technologies like cloning (or maybe not-so-futuristic) and creating androids with human-like emotions, etc. I think this manga's okay if you understand that it's only fantasy. There's practically no gore, and no language that I can recall...

Shaman King
Definitely the most occult manga in the magazine. Shamans are people who can channel dead spirits, or even become possessed by them. The main character and several others have a "personal ghost" that they integrate with to fight each other. A lot of spirit priest/priestess sort of things are involved. Putting that aside, there are some good points: Yoh and Anna, while engaged (at the age of 14!) and living in the same house, don't sleep together or do anything remotely sensual - in fact, they act more like arguative brother and sister. The ideas of friendship being more important than power, giving people second chances, and being kind and merciful to your enemies and rivals are major themes. I don't particularly like this manga or find it very entertaining, but it's a fairly interesting read if you remain concious towards the objectionable material.

Hikaru No Go
I love this manga. It's clean, funny, and interesting too. It does involve "spirits", but doesn't delve any farther into other aspects of pagan religions (or at least so far, it's only been running in SJ for a couple months) Sai was a professional Go player way back when in an early Japanese period, but when he lost a game to a cheating opponent, he was so distressed that he commited suicide, and somehow his spirit got trapped in an old Go board. Centuries later, 6th grader Hikaru finds the board in his grandfather's attic and becomes possessed by Sai, and then becomes an avid Go player under Sai's instruction. Hikaru's not the most honest boy but Sai acts almost like a concience to him, and their antics together are extremely amusing. The only wierd thing is that Sai looks very girlish. He has dark lips, long shiny hair, and is often holding a fan. In fact I thought he was a girl for the first whole chapter.

YuYu Hakusho
Sigh, I must say that I love this one as well, even though it's based on the "Spirit World" and the "Demon World", and non-Christian afterlife beliefs. Some parts are just too funny. The main part of the plot involves Yusuke, a spirit detective for the Spirit world, fighting demons so they don't endanger humans on earth. A LOT of supernatural/spiritual powers, violence, and Yusuke swears often. There are of course the usual good moral themes as well, nothing new. I'd like to hear what others have to say about this manga.
