Help me find a manga to start reading!!!

Hello, all! I've been wanting to read a little manga lately, but I don't know what to start with (as I'm not much of a manga fan as of now). I would rather not read something for which there is an anime already released (so no Fruits Basket suggestions, please).

I would really like a comedy, and romance is perfectly fine with me. Action might be okay, but only if it has a great plot to back it up. And it MUST be clean -- no nudity, no sex, no horribly sinful stuff that a Christian would dislike, no yaoi (duh!), etc.

So, I invite your suggestions! :thumb:

Um, if you like shoujo Imadoki is good with a whole lot of romance and funny stuff. I don't think there is an anime for it? I have observed no bad content in it.( it I did someone would be on my case)

Hmm, Angelic Layer is great, although it's already been animed....as has DNAngel (good from what I've read, I don't know enough to really give you an honest approval). Action wise, Cowboy Bebop and Gundam Wing are both *fairly* clean...a few curse words and Faye's skimpy clothing, but I don't know what's too much for you...and they were animed too.

Geez, I really don't know of a title that DOESN'T have an anime attached to it. O.o

Yeah, I know what you mean, Ashley. It seems like everything has an anime with it. DNAngel is what I'm leaning toward right now since I haven't seen the anime and I've heard that the anime isn't very consistent with the manga. Is it too much "pretty boy" though?

Anymore?

From what I hear, the only thing about DNAngel manga that's like the DNAngel anime is that all the characters have the same names. Yes, I hear it really is that different.

I would definitely suggest it. The plot can be confusing at times, but if you just accept from revelations without totally understanding every word-- you'll enjoy it. Personally, I find the style of DNAngel to be one of my favorites.

As far as being "pretty boy"-- What's wrong with that?! Just kidding. I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but if you're asking if the only reason this title is popular is because a bunch of crazy fan girls drool on Dark, Satoshi, Daisuke, ect, I'd say "no." While that may happen, DNAngel has a very interesting story line. I think you'll really enjoy it.

(Psst! I was hoping you would reply to this one, Mangafanatic, since your name implies sage advice for this thread! ;) )

Anyway, thanks for the input, and I think I will go with DNAngel. And y'all can feel free to drool over those dudes if you wish. I'm not puttin' ya down for that, y'know!!!

And I'm not rejecting Fruits Basket! I love the anime (it's one of my favorite shows of all time), but I just didn't feel like reading a storyline that I have already seen in an anime. I would say the same thing about a Rurouni Kenshin manga, for example.

Am I in the clear now? Furuba fans, please don't hate me!!!

Heheh, I'll get out of crazy mode now.

And any suggestions to compete with DNAngel are still welcome. Variety is the spice of life, y'know! :thumb:

I was just joking about the Furuba thing. I aspire to live upto my username, but I wish I better lived upto its glory!

Since you've replied and I won't be double posting, I'd also throw in Tsubasa and Pretear. Tsubasa is by Clamp (Clamp: an Indian word that means "Good art" :P ), and I really enjoyed it. The interesting thing is that it contains innumerable cameos by other Clamp characters from various Clamp works (CCS, Chobits, and so many others!). The plot itself is really fun and adventurous, and its really clean. [A little language and an occasional low cut dress that's worn by the dimension witch].

Second, Pretear. This might be a girly manga, but it's really clean. There's a little cleveage seen a couple times. We see the top edge of Himeno's bra once, because a button came undone on her blouse. Luckily, there's no language, and it's clean on all other scores Clean. clean. clean. The plot is, sort of, a re-telling of Snow White. I feel I should warn you that this is a Magical Girl manga (although it really good and it's not your typical magical girl manga.) But if you can take, or outright enjoy, Magical girl manga-- this one's a no brainer, IMHO.

Well, actually, I'm a fan of Sailor Moon, so I'm okay with some of the magical girl stuff. I'll look at those, too, then! Thanks!

Rogie_San, if it makes you feel better about Furuba, it only half-heartedly follows the anime. First off, Furuba the manga is 14 volumes long, while the anime only goes to (someone help me out here if I'm wrong) volume 7 I think. Also, the manga's order of events are really different (so like, in volume 6 I read the anime ending as well as stuff I hadn't heard before). It might be a series to rent/read at a bookstore rather than buy for you.

Actually now that you said something about them, I might look into Tsubasa and Pretear too, Osaka!

Another Sailor Moon fan. :3

Uh, yes, Ashley is correct. The Fruits Basket manga is like a thousand times better than the anime. Different events occur, and (not yet in the English release, but soon) the Rooster and the Horse show up (w00t!), as well as finding out Akito's horrible secret (heh heh...I don't think it's horrible...but that's a matter of opinion :3). I mean, there's just SO much more in the Furuba manga than in the anime, that even beginning to tell you the differences would result in a post full of spoilers.

And yes, Ash, I think the anime only goes to volume 7, at least as far as I know (that's only sorta true, as in the manga Tohru hasn't met Ritsu or Hiro yet, while she did in the anime before she found out the truth about Kyou, which was in the manga volume 6).

Ah, suggestions! Uh...have you seen Cardcaptor Sakura yet? If not, that's a good manga...hmm...

Most of the other manga I own doesn't fit your criteria. :hits_self

Oh! Well, if you like Sailor Moon, Pretear would probably be right up your alley.

Well, Ashley, if there's THAT much more manga to Fruits Basket, then I should definitely look into it, too! I really did enjoy the anime, so I'm sure I would enjoy the manga just as much.

I've actually been wanting to see the Cardcaptor Sakura anime. I think the manga would probably be good, too.

So many suggestions! I can't wait to go to the bookstore now. So, I've gotta look at DNAngel, Pretear, Tsubasa, Fruits Basket, and Cardcaptor Sakura. Well, that's a lot of shoujo, but I'm a secure man!

(*Wishes everyone would quit staring at him*)

Thanks, y'all!

Well, I finally made it to the bookstore this weekend (actually two of them), and I stocked up on several volume ones. At Books a Million, I bought the first volumes of Cardcaptor Sakura, Fruits Basket, and Comic Party, and today at Waldenbooks, I bought the first volumes of Tsubasa and Sgt. Frog.

I'm not sure about Comic Party, though. I later flipped through it and there seemed to be some fan service-y things going on (unlike the surprisingly clean anime -- at least it is so far). Also, I noticed a use of very strong language in one part. I'll probably dislike that one.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, guys. I started Cardcaptor Sakura, and I like it so far! :thumb:

Yeah, I've been told the manga of Comic Party was more offensive that the anime.

*sniff* Yes yes, soomeone has rejected an awesome manga....

Definitley! She's the one to ask!

I would say Tsubasa, DNAngel, Candidate for Goddess (by the same manga-ka as DNAngel but the story again is different from the anime), Magic Knights Rayearth by CLAMP (story different from anime)....
