Manga Disaster

I started moving to my new place yesterday and went off to pick up the rest of my stuff in the storage today. As I moved the boxes around........
"Hmmm....why are some of my box stuff wet at the bottom? Wait a minute, this is not good. One of those boxes contain...
Yup. Most of MY MANGA!!!!!"
List of Victims:
Naruto
Black Cat
Rurouni Kenshin
DNAngel
Shaman King
Detective Conan
Peach Girl
Houshin Engi
a few more I can't be bothered to remember
A total of 50+ manga books SOAKED WET
I have no idea what happened. Some serious condensation? The storage was in a friend's house basement. What could have happened? I don't know the answer to that. All I know is I will be spending the next few days drying my manga with my hairdryer.
I was very frustrated at the split second upon discovering the destruction but strangely, I don't feel devastated. I guess that's a good sign. It confirms that I'm not obsessed with manga as I thought I was. Still, it's really a shame to have that happen to my manga collection. Sighh...but thank God it wasn't the artbooks or my drawings. Now THAT would have really hurt big time.
Sniff.....my poor manga.

Oh dear, poor mave! It's good to hear you're taking the loss well. You know what I pictured when you said you were going to dry them with a hairdryer? That one scene in the incredibles when he set off the fire extinguishers. That was a funny movie. But anyhow, sorry for your loss!

Owies! ;_; That's harsh; and you've got some good series there. Glad you're being such a good sport about it, though. ^__^

T^T I'm sorry to hear about your manga, Mave! My copy of Dragon Knights 2 suffered a smiliar fate, but I managed to salvage it - this pages are only a little yellow and wrinkled now. ^^ Hopefully you'll be able to dry your manga off and save them.

That's why I don't keep my manga in a box (though I don't have very many). Manga is so expensive....

I can relate. My place suffered severe smoke damage when the guy next door burned down his place. The restoration company told me that most of the books in my bedroom were unrecoverable (soot, etc) because that had the heaviest smoke concentration. Guess where my manga were
At least the anime survived inside the cases. So when some anti-anime relatives told me (before I moved back in) that maybe God was trying to tell me something, I just gave them a smile and said "You mean God hates manga but likes anime?"
...they've given up trying to convert me now

Man, that sucks. *hug* And if I was in AH's situation, I'd just... cry. Once I several manga books in my backpack with my lunch when I walked to the park, and my pudding exploded. Now I get grossed out everytime I read them. Oh, well...

Well, at least most were readable, though the pages were darkened. Sure can't e-bay them now. Some very good ones were lost though: the original Lum*Urusei Yatsura (which is hard to find) was a total loss. Gunsmith Cats should be replaced. A lot of my favorites suffered the worst and the ones I didn't like faired well.

Yeah...tell me about it. Ever since my notebook with my Legaia fanfic (and some other writings) got destroyed in the hurricane, I haven't been able to write since.

Wow, all these terrible manga stories.
I have a happy one! My manga once saved my head! Literally. I was standing on on a stairway after suffering what I thought was a minor injury to the hand. I guess my body didn't think so, because I sort of went into shock and passed out right on the stone steps. I would have cracked my head pretty badly if my backpack hadn't been so stuffed with manga. My head didn't even touch the steps.
When a friend revived me and my mom arrived, both were quite upset and worried. I got a lot of "are you okay??". My first words: "My manga and CD player!!"

Oooo, poor Mave! This is so horrible! I hope it isn't too late, but I have a suggestion for you.
Put them in a conventional oven (on LOW!) for a few minutes. Like 20 or so. When we were flying back to washington, my parents split a gallon of ice tea on our plane tickets and immediately did that. They were a *little* stiff, but very legible. It helps them dry out evenly...although like I said, they might be stiff. Poor Mave! I feel your pain!

Ooo! Poor mave!
Poor friend too! I know that if my friends manga was soaked in my place, I would be terribly upset...

That's great!
Yeah, I have a long running joke that, if my house were on fire-- I'd stuff grab all my manga before I got out.

Thanks guys! *hugs* It's wonderful to have ppl who can really feel my pain <--ok ok so it's not that dramatic but you know what I mean.
Are you serious, Ash??! In the oven?? I think my new roommates already think I'm nuts drying my manga with the table fan and books flipped open, all over on the floor. They'll probably freak when they find me trying to 'bake' the books as well!
I just moved in yesterday and I'm already doing weird things in their apartment XD;;; It doesn't help that they probably have no clue what anime/manga is AT ALL. But thanks! I'll give that a try when my roommates aren't looking
But yeah I'm getting that annoying 'wavy' (?) bent on the pages....like some seashell effect or something. WHat I'm doing is drying the manga page by page with the fan/hair dryer and then, squashing/flattening out the books with a super heavy box.
Other victims, I forgot to mention: Pretear, Kamikaze, Hikaru no Go and a Virus screencap book. Also, I kinda exaggerated....the total number of books is about 38 but hey, it's still a pain trying to dry them all. ^__^;

The manga will probably dry out and turn out fine.

Well, what should I say? I feel bad for you, but a lot of people have said that; I don't really have any suggestions, nor do I have any relevant or interesting stories. In fact, I don't have much of anything, but I managed to post anyway.

Well, if people only posted when they had something to say, this (and other forums) would be pretty short.
Consider my post as exhibit A

Taking seriously the unserious nature of your post, I will still state this: my post, in my mind, was the digital equivalent of silence. Were a person to have told me about a similar situation in real life, I would have said little except perhaps that I was sorry. Why speak when there is nothing to be said? Here, however, if one says nothing it appears that one has ignored the person and issue in question. That, I did not wish to do.

Sorry. The forums I hang out at tend to be rather irreverent unless the post being replied to is deadly earnest in nature (like I did with the poster with the problem). Guess I'll have to watch that flippant attitude here.

Heh UC, I appreciate your post even if you have little to say. ^__^
For entertainment purposes, I took some pics of what's left of my manga. XD;;; Sure, they'll never be the same again but at least, the pages are not falling out. lol
