is wish good?

Postby Nia-chan » Fri Aug 22, 2003 2:01 pm

Ok, I saw this manga called "wish" in the store and was reading it, but I just wanted to know if anyone else read it and if it was something I should read. I know the Japanese thoughts on God and angels are somewhat, uh, different, then was it's really about, but I don't want to read anything bad. By the way I looked to see if there was already a topic about this, but I didn't find one.

Hi Nia-chan! I have never read Wish, surprising as I am quite the CLAMP fan. However, I did find a good website about Wish. Here it is:

http://vespertinus.com/eden/

You should check it out yourself, as I didn't look through the whole thing. It sounds like there are angels and demons involved in the story, but I'm not sure that it's a very Christian portrayal of such beings.

Hope this helps!

Hey there. There used to be a couple topics concerning Wish, but they got buried. I've read Wish, and I really don't recommend it. Actually, when I bought the first issue, I ended up taking it back to the store. The idea of homosexual angels, not to mention promiscuous angels running and successfully hiding from God (and that being presented as justifiable...). If you like CLAMP's art style, I highly recommend Angelic Layer. If you'd like, I can point you to some other mangas that I liked as well, and I'm sure other people would like to suggest some titles. But I'd look into something else if I were you.

Ooops..... someone didn't read their Bible enough to know that homosexuality is a sin, and angels wouldn't even think about running away from him..... gotta look out for stuff like that because there are a lot of false references to that which is Holy.... especially in anime and manga where the creators like to spice just about everything up ^^;

I think in any sort of non-Christ-focused media, not just anime and manga, there is a tendency to mess with the spiritual in ways that are virtually unthinkable from our point of view when that subject comes to light.

Rei Rei wrote:Well... I can't say that Wish is my favorite CLAMP manga for a number of reasons. I've read a few chapters and there are some things that bother me a little. First of all, there are angels and demons... and I honestly can't say that their portrayal is quite correct. The main character, an angel named Kohaku, transforms into a "chibi" (small) form during the night, and his opponent, a demon called Kouryuu, does the same in the morning, and can only appear in his original shape during the night. Then we have this handsome demon named Kokyou, who's the son of the Devil himself. :stressed: Kokyou is in love with an angel Hisui - and Hisui loves him back. :shady: Because of that, Hisui was expelled from Heaven (or something like that), and Kokyou was banned from Hell, so they're wandering around the human world together now. Oh, and God sends messages to his angels through some things that look like plush bunnies with flowers. :eyebrow: They're awfully cute, I agree, but... eh. Well, you get my point.

About the gender of those angels and demons - well, I think Kokyou is male (he's the most masculine character in this story, I think, along with doctor Shuichirou), but I'm not sure about the angels. They could be feminine pretty boys OR genderless beings. Shuichirou's grandpa thought Kohaku was a girl at first, but Kohaku told him that he wasn't a girl, so they most definitely aren't female. So the relationships in this manga may or may not be homosexual... but even if they aren't, angel/demon romances are just wrong by definition, regardless of gender. :stressed:
right on the money!! :jump:
they potray the angels as androginous (akin to dogma ) some of us may know that nobody actually knows an angels gender.

I think that's it ok to read stuff like wish even though it has some incorrect portrayals... I mean, I'm not reading Manga in order to learn more about God... I think as long as one accepts takes the manga as it's own things and doesn't try to asign signifigant meaning to it, it's fine to read.

On the other hadn, taking wish from an entirely other point of view, i thought the storyline was kind of silly and i don't think it as told as well as it could have been. I wouldn't recommend wish on those points, not because it might be spiritualy offensive, but because i really don't think it was that good of a manga. definately doesn't stand up to other clamp works at any rate.

Yah, that's how Buffy the Vampire Slayer is. It ticks me off.

I haven't heard od "Wish" but there is this another "God Focused" Anime called "Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne" That is questionable, though she is fighting for God, there's still stuff like she's supposed to be the reincarnation of "Joan o'arc". And one of the demons fall in love with an angel.. so on so forth.

Another one is called "Saint Tail ", which she uses Magic words/powers.

YIKES!

But "Wish" sounds like it fits into this category as well. We gotta get the truth into Manga/Anime!

Actually, I’ve seen most of St. Tail, and it’s really not to be compared to Wish.

St. Tail is about a peppy middle school girl, Meimi, who transforms into St. Tail, the legendary thief, at night. But she steals only for the good of others. For example, in one episode, an old lady’s antique mirror was stolen. St. Tail retrieved the mirror before the real thieves could auction it off. That’s the only kind of stealing she does. So how did St. Tail know about the mirror in the first place? Well, she has a “partner in crimeâ€

Like video games, right? I'm working on that. (Still, even after more than 10 years.)

I know this is kinda off topic, and I hope everyone forgives me, but I think that's a great idea! ^_^ There needs to be Christian video games! So far (and that's not saying much, since I don't play a whole lot), I haven't seen anything vaugly Christian in video games. Although Square's Kingdom Hearts was one of the rare clean games, and I'm looking forward to a sequel. But even that used magic. BTW, that's one of the things that I liked about the .hack video games was that they *did* use magic, but they called it "skills" and you have SP (skill points) instead of MP (magic points). Hmm... maybe I should start a new thread ^_^

I like wish, however is not one of CLAMP's best mangas. I mostly like it because of the hilarious things that happend sometimes, but the end of the mangas was very bad!! :stressed: Why such a sad end?! Atleast is not as sad as X was... I don't think CLAMP has made such a sad ending like they did to X :dizzy: If you like hilarious mangas I recomed Dragon Knights ( I love Dragon knights, however the manga changes from vol.6 up is kind of serious but it still has its comedy parts) :jump: Dragon knights is my fave Manga!! I wanna collect the whole series is 18 vol. long (that's alot  but I'll try) I'm sorry that has nothing to do with the topic :hits_self gomen!! :(
:jump: I'll try to stay on the topic next time!!

Yeah, we have an old, old thread about these. A company called Wisdom Tree made several Christian games for the NES - the most well-know being Spiritual Warfare.

Amen. Besides, we have to keep in mind that Japan is not a predominantly Christian society like ours.
