I'm starting this thread to learn more about the series I have serious interest in it and I'd like to know some of the good and bad points in it and your opinions on them. In other words is it clean? This will probably decide wheather or not I get some of its manga.

Yes, it is by Rumiko Takahashi. She's done Urusei Yatsura, Mermaid's Scar, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Maison Ikkoku...

Anyway, going back on topic...

Maison Ikkoku is about a ronin (guy who hasn't gotten into college), Godai, living in an apartment with the most irritating neighbors you can imagine. He's all set to move out, when a beautiful new caretaker, Kyoko Otanashi, moves in. He instantly falls in love with her, but the problem is she's recently widowed, and later in the series he has a rival for her hand (her tennis coach, Mitaka).

This only applies to the anime, mind you (sorry, never read the manga).

Mrs. Ichinose is a drunk. So is Akemi, and she walks around in a nightgown most of the time (only in the first few episodes, she starts wearing more clothing later in the series). There's a little bit of swearing, but not too much or too harsh. No violence, other than goofy cartoony violence.

I like the series, personally, though the only problem I have with it is, why is Godai so obsessed with Kyoko? I personally think Kozue is much nicer and cuter (an old school friend of Godai's who shows up not too far into the show).

But that's just me, I guess, and it wouldn't make for a very interesting series if he did pick Kozue, would it?

The whole show (and the whole manga ... I think) isn't out from Viz, so I can't add much. However, Rev Doc is the resident expert on this particular series.

So far, in the anime, there's been some off-colour jokes and a couple of brief flashes (mostly Akemi strutting around in a see-through nightie, as kaem mentions above), but not a huge amount of problem content.

However, the manga does not shy away from much, including a sexual relationship between characters (avoiding spoiler territory, but if you're concerned about premarital sex or those kinds of scenes, you may have trouble with later volumes of the manga) -- this per Gypsy, I'll let her add more detail if she feels it necessary. These scenes were either majorly glossed over or totally dropped from the anime, according to what I've heard and what Rev Doc has told me.

Anyway, since this was about the manga originally, I'll put it there.

I could still be champ, but I'd feel bad taking it away from one of the younger guys. - George Foreman
