Yeah, your thread's in the right place.

Why's manga rated. Hmmm. Good question. I've never really thought of it, but here's what come to me first off:
Well, when people see manga, they think "oh, cartoons. Kid stuff. Might as well pick one of those up for little Joey while I'm here. Hmm. . .[insert name of fanservicey manga], that looks good." I think the ratings are there to help the ignorant to realize that just because they're illustrated doesn't mean they're for kids. Furthermore, I wouldn't be opposed to all books having ratings. I can't count the times I've been reading innocently through a book and been totally caught off guard by some thing sexual.

Well, Mangas didn't always have ratings back in the day when it was more expensive and less quantiful. But now that it's grown alot more and the manga flow over here is increasing greatly, of course they'd have to rate things. Most people think that just because it's animated or if it looks cartoony, that it's gonna be for kids (Our stupid standards over here...). I mean, it's not like you'd want to have a caring mom accidentally pick up Akira just because "Billy" likes anime and she's heard that Akira was good anime. You see? Ratings are nessicary for non Otakus...

Ahem. Ratings aren't just for non Otakus. Ratings help me a lot. I don't want to read one rated Mature or anything! I only like to read the Teen rated stuff. If I don't know much about a manga, I would want to know if it's rated too high for me. I bet ratings wouldn't matter to people who will read anything, but I like to be warned, thank you very much.

I think they are rated because there can be nudity and far too graphic pictures. Most books don't have pictures like that. It's just the way TV shows are rated for the same reason.

I would more or less agree: it seems that all the graphic art mediums have ratings, and others do not. Movies, television, video games and the like are all graphic in nature... and hence have ratings. Books and literary magazines do not.

I agree totally! I mean, I know at the library and many bookstores, they separate regular books into sections like Children's, Young Adult's (or Teen's), and just regular Fiction and all, but I would like to be warned! I mean, one can read the short synopsis on the book cover, and on some novels one can tell just from that if it's worth reading or not, but not on a lot! I guess people think that only visual and audio meduims need to be rated, that we won't be affected by just reading stuff (WRONG!!). Anywho, that's my rant for today!

Especially considering the sexual crud authors feel obliged to put in any novel that's intended for an audience older than middle school. BLEH X 2.
