Manga Cafes

Postby Kireihana » Sat Oct 23, 2004 11:19 am

So has anyone heard of these? I think it's utter genius. I first heard about them from my uncle, who lived in Japan for a period of time. He said there are "cafes" where you can go and pay a certain amount of money to read as much manga as you want. For example, you can pay for 30 minutes, and read as much as you want for 30 minutes. Isn't that awesome?!? I wish we had those in the US but I don't think manga is quite that popular... *yet* ;)

Here is a link to more information on manga cafes: http://www.tjf.or.jp/eng/ge/ge27mangakissa.htm

Something to add to your "when I go to Japan" to-do list!

Well that site said that most manga cafes also offer internet, music, tv and video games... so I guess there's pretty much something for everybody.

Being the freeloader I am, I could do the same at Barnes and Noble for free, but the selection here would be MUCH larger, not to mention the free drinks. I can't argue with free drinks. *Puts this on his "To-Do-If-I-Ever-Go-To-Japan List*

Wow, that sounds like paradise! I'd pay to get drinks and all the manga I can read!

They actually do have manga in some of the boba and tapioca tea cafes by my house, but it's only Shounen Jump and it's all in Chinese. u_u;

That would be fun.
Now all it would take is say MONEY and the knowledge of Japanese.
I could see someone like Yumiko from Read Or Die or Michelle and
Maggie from the sequel to it R.O.D The Tv spending literally forever in a place like that.As long as there's books involved. :)

I've seriously thought about opening something like this after I get my business major. But I'd have to do alot of research to see if it would be something you could make money doing.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

When I visited a friend in LA, she took me to a boba drink place called Tea Spirit, I think. Anyway, this was a very hardcore Asian place and they had bookshelves on one wall, filled with manga and Japanese maganizes for people to read. I don't know if you had to pay or not, but I thought that was cool. It would be nice if there was such a place closer to home.

I remember reading about those online once. Sounds pretty cool. It would actually be something I could see some College Anime club doing....lol.

Why Pay?!? As Fireproof said, just visit your local B&N. And if you feel like you have to pay[you masochists], then buy something from the Starbucks cafe....

About manga cafes in America... there is one with over 200,000 titles that just opened in New York! Not sure if they're translated/not translated/both, but still with that many titles and paying only $5 to read as many as you want... what a bargain!

EDIT: there's over 20,000 made up of both orginal and translated manga

20,000 titles!? Oh my gosh. I wouldn't even know where to start!
