*shrugs*

In Nihongo no kurasu: anime = Ah - Knee - May

Just hanging out with my friends, I tend to slip back into the "(A)pple - (Ni)mrod - May" pronounciation.

I know some people who pronounce it "Ah - knee - me" and even worse - "An-Neem"

My pronunciation of the last syllable of anime is usually about halfway between "may" and "meh". (I think the proper Japanese is actually "meh", but I try to compromise a little for the sake of the rest of you. ^_~ )

I don't care if it's incorrect, Mon-gah just sounds retarded to me. So I have, and always will, say Maine-gah. And yeah, I'm a lazy texan when it comes to anime too--Ann-ni(mrod)-may all the way.

Somehow, I doubt this post will help dissaude the stereotypes already inflicted upon me.

Indonesians basically have a similar way of prounouncing words as the Japanese so we pretty much pronounce it the way they do : Ah-knee-meh and Mahn-gah.

But we usually go "an-neem" just to prounounce it quicker (we have abbreviations for a LOT of things)

I always pronounced it a(nt)-ni(mrod)-may and main-ga.
I know how it's supposed to sound, but...
Actually how IS manga supposed to be pronounced? Is is Man-gah...or Mahng-gah?...just in case I ever decide to say it properly..

Well, as is my (limited) understanding of Japanese thus far (feel free to correct me on this), there is no "A" (a)pple sound, only "A" f(a)ther. So it would have to be mahn-ga. I actually pronounce it man-ga (not main-ga, mahn-ga or mahn-ger) but I know it's not right...:P

Strictly speaking, if that's the romaji, the correct pronunciation would be:
Ma N Ga

(Maa un Gaa is about as close as most americans will ever get. Just say it really fast.)

I say 'em that way too.

Inkhana is right, they are supposed to be pronounced with the "ah" sound as in 'father'

And Angelchick, you say mang-ka? well, as long as you don't replace the 'a' with an 'o' you are in the clear.

No matter how I spell my pronounciations, I know that whatever american reads it will add a fair bit of accent to it... so I'll give up trying to tell you how an english guy pronounces manga... :)

I say ann-ni(mrod)-may when I'm talking to some people, but I'll get neurotic and switch to the Japanese pronunciation.

Maine-gah?? EEew... Whenever I get anime from Manga productions, it makes me cringe to hear the way they pronounced their own company's name... It's ma-n-ga not me-i-n-ga... *shiver*

Oh, and I'll never get over that ad that called Goku "goo-koo" or those horrific fansubs of DBZ and DBGT... I don't know what it is about that show that draws those kinds of people... It was the only fansub I've ever seen to be THAT BAD... None of the others came close to that bad... And I didn't find any good ones, either...

moses supposes his toeses are roses but moses supposes erroniously...

sorry, just this thread reminds me of a movie where a movie actress with an absolutely terrible accent has to take voice lessons....

yah, i'll be quiet now.

Here just to make this bit of randomness valid: I've got manga right and anime wrong

*remembers the UY Movie #2 dub which called Mendoo "MEND-ow"* ... for those not in the know, it should be pronounced "MEND-oh" (lengthen the O), but depending on how you romanize, it could be spelled Mendoo or Mendou. Still, you would expect US Manga Corps to know what transliterations should be pronounced as, or at least to tell their voice actors the right one.
