Why is hair color such a big deal anyway? Why can't the schools focus on what the real problems are instead of sending good kids home just because they want to color their hair? Nyarrr...this kinda stuff annoys me so much...

i think i understand this.... this decision to send the student home was probably made on a ccount of prejudice. most people judge that a person is a "punk" and "disobedient" when they die their hair, have multiple piercings etc. when some of us just want to have fun dyeing their hair (although i'm not the type of person~)

this is high school, right? i mean in the university you can dye your hair neon purple and no one would care. XD

back when i was in high school, you could dye your hair and no one would bother you as long as the color is more or less of the brownish-gold tint (NO pinks or green or blues or reds, lol) and if it's quite lightly-applied. but that's for girls only. boys aren't allowed to dye their hair. they weren't even allowed to wear gel or hairspray. ^^;;

1.No, hair color doesn't distract me.

2.Of course. Besides, they should be more concerned with the people who make it their mission to wear the smallest amount of clothing possible.

3.I would arbitarily say 8th grade. Any younger, and it was probably the kid's parents that wanted the color, and that is just...wrong (not to mention the fact that it looks bad).

Private schools can do what ever they want, but public schools shouldnt be alowed to punish students for what they choose to do with their own bodies, I think that schools just assume every thing is about them, and they think a girl coloring her hair must be some kind of attack against their authority, shes not just doing it to express herself. Its the same reason we cant have hats at school. (grrrr)

I dont think kids should color their hair until they are at least in middle school, but it shouldnt be banned by the schools, I believe its the parents responcibility to decide what their kids can or cannot do to their hair.

- not at all, not during class at least. I saw a girl with raindow hair and i ran into a pillar at school though. I think it's cool.

- sure why not? It's kinda getting into the prejuduice thing where if you have a different color of hair thats considered not normal, you're denied education when you're paying for it.

- as you see, i think hair color is ok but i think you shoudl draw the line early elementary to bout 5th grade. In 6th I died (well hair sprayed) by entire head a bright red

Nothings wrong with wantitng your hair a different hair color. I would do mine completely white or light blue but my parents won't let me cuase they'll get embrassed by me so when I leave the house and live my own, my parents said I can tatoo, dye, or pierce whatever.

Yes, but as long as it's not to the point it distracts others, like I explained. Anything's fine as long as it's not so big and colourful that if i sit behind them in the class I can't see the board and the teacher. Otherwise, perfectly fine.

Mine currently allows ALL except ones I explained. Just nothing TOO fancy, as I explained. Well, I see no point in primary school kids dying their hair... really. High school too, but probably around the senior areas. If they want it, fine.

That reminds me, I'm getting more grey hair these days. One day I should bleach it white.

- Of course! I can't see why anyone would deny anyone their time in class just because of dyed hair. Like people have said before, there are bigger problems that public schools need to deal with, hair color should be THE LAST of their worries. Besides, in public school (in CA at least) a school LOSES money if a student isn't there the whole day, so it's only taking money from schools if they decide to send kids home because of dyed hair.

- I think middle schoolers and up should be allowed to dye their hair. Elementary is too young, and kids that age should focus more on their studies and building social skills and friendships than on their appearances.

I think if the schools rules say no hair dye then the kids should not do it. Life is not fair...and school is the cushion before you get lobbed into the real fun...if its not a teacher its a boss...most your life someone will be above you telling you what to do...sad but true. As far as hair I have dyed mine a few times...and I don't have an issue with it. However I am willing to bet that the girls school had said no dye and she did it simply to be cool or buck the system. If for whatever reason the school says no hair dye...your not selling out your rights to obey the rules...its just hair dye. *eye roll*

I personally don't get distracted unless the style/color is utterly outrageous, or it resembles an anime character I know. (That means something as simple as dark hair with blond bangs makes me stare and think "Hikaruhikaruhikaruhikaru.")

If it's not ridiculous, I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed in class. I guess the hardest part would be knowing where to draw the line. Maybe that's why they're so strict.

I don't see much point with changing hair color anyway (aside from maybe cosplay, which is the only reason I would do it), but I'm not against it. I think elementary is kind of young to be messing with your appearance like that, though, like Kokoro Daisuke said.

Seeing as this thread is just getting responses of mostly yes, no, and high school over and over agin, I'm going to try to take it another direction. I heard a radio talk show host advocate bringing back school uniforms to public schools. What do you guys think of this idea? Do you think it might cut down on some of the more superficial distinctions that school kids make? I think it would. Unfortunately for some of you though, it would also mean no hair dye. Is the freedom for pithy forms of expression (e.g. hair dye, clothes) worth giving up in favor of reducing cliques and (in some schools) instances of gang violence?

Check this out, I grew up in high school with very strict rules....

Everyone MUST wear the following:
Uniform (no skirt should ever pass knee length)
White socks
White shoe (only canvas...no sport shoes allowed)
Name tag and school badge

Hair hoho...
Guys: No dyed hair, fringe/front hair cannot pass eyebrows, no shaving/army look, no punk hairstyle, no long hair pass below the ear (no bishie look)
Girls: no dyed hair, long hair MUST be tied up once it passes the shoulders, scrunchies/ribbons must be either black or blue (no exception), no big or 'big ring' earrings, no nose rings, and only one pierce per ear (no multiple ones)

That's just the beginning...
We had a lot of other rules...no cell phone, no music (CD player), no comics bla bla bla...

Best of all, it was MY duty to make sure everyone did the following. I was a prefect. I bet you all would hate this prefectorial system (it'll never work in U.S): Certain students were selected to monitor and handle school discipline, we were like student police and everyone hated us. But I did it for 8 years and have no regrets. bwahahaha....

So my answer to the questions:
1) Yes, but it depends. I had one dud dye his hair bright green and shaved to shape a "S" on his head. He distracted me throughout the whole Statistics lecture that week.
2) I think it's fine to make such rules in high school but if they only focus on hair and not more serious issues like smoking or playing truant, they've got a problem. I think all schools need to focus more on inner personalities and attitudes.
3) Age? Well, high school was fine for me. When I got to college, I had passed that experimental phase and until today, I've never bothered to dye my hair or do something funky.

So my initial response was: "What's the deal? Life's unfair and it's just hair, ppl" But this is my background and upbringing, thought I'll share it. hehe Yeah, I must be boring and a real killjoy...

thats like really messed up, and i thought my school was strick!

at my school we are aloud to have hair dye just nothing over the extreme(like no full head color of like blue,green...) the black gurls here get to have red hair like in thier weave. um i have purple strikes and no one said nething

they said we're not suposed to have ne nose rings and stuff like that. only ears. and they said that guys can only have one pirceing. but now like 4 kids have nose pircings and the guys have more than one pircing. oh yea and a 2 ppl have toung rings and no one has said nething. i guess we have a bad reputation.
oh yea about the punk thing. ne1 can come to school with spiked hair.

I went to a school that had a uniform system for most of my life (I've only recently been "freed"), and in all honesty, uniforms don't reduce the numbers of cliques/gangs. It's nature for some to want to ostracize other human beings, and instituting uniforms means that people will just have to find other excuses to clique off.

And besides, uniforms are EXPENSIVE. o_o;;

I'd get in soo much trouble cause hy hair is past my eyebrows and my ears. I can touch my hair with the bottom of my eye (a summer ago, I could touch my hair with my tougne ). Plus I always have a scrungy look withmy having cause I only shave Sunday for church so I my neck is always cruffy and so is my cheeks

Thats...really absurd ok I have purple streaks in my hair and my school could care less.....but you know it just deepends on what kinda school it is...if its like a private school or like a religious school then they probably think its inappropriate or it doesnt go with the uniforms...cause you know most upperclass schools and religious schools wear uniforms...but whatever the reason personally i think its mean that they cant go to class cause they have a hair color other than the so called "normal or God given colors for hair" lol.

Hmm... Skirts HAVE to be short? My sister was like that in Catholic school. They had short skirts and they weren't allowed to wear shorts underneath them... In my Private school (a Charasmatic school) it was the exact opposite. If they wore any dress or skirt, they had to wear shorts underneath. Also, no really short shorts... Shorts had to be at least as long as the tips of your fingers when you stood with your hands to your sides, for both girls and guys. Guys couldnt' take their shirts off, we had ot have our shirts tucked in and we couldn't have any writing on them.

Saying skirts had to be short and no shorts allowed underneath is a recipe for trouble, if you ask me...

Personaly I think freedom is one of the most important things Americans have. As far as the cliques go, I'll just ask one question: Who really wants to be part of a group that judges you by what you wear anyway?

Well, just look on the bright side. In college, no one gives a flip about what color your hair is or what you wear.
