Yeah, I live in California. I live narry but a few miles away, and I didn't feel a thing.

(Ooh, I sound so intelligent and olden style with the "Narry")

Can we stop bickering? My word! Poor hurt feelings, I bet those people who are dead feel horrible about that... *eye roll* why don't all of us spend some time praying for the familys of victims rather then cat fighting.

Well, one interesting thing in all of this is that only one FM radio station in our area remained on..."Positive, Encouraging K-Love!" So perhaps many people's radios scanned to it and they wouldn't have heard it otherwise... It amazes me the ways God makes good out of every tragedy.

Volt, I'm sorry, but I heartily disagree with your post. Death entered with the fall of humanity, and, like sin, it is a curse, a horrible punishment for the sinful act of the first humans. :sniffle:

Death is not in any way the ideal or a blessing. It is a curse. :shake:

I'm not so sure... in this fallen world...

Blame it on my love for "The Lord of the Rings" and my reading a bit recently in "The Silmarillion"... maybe also my watching this week of the middle episodes of "Haibane Renmei"...

I kind of think of death in the terms of, as Tolkien put it in his works, "the gift to men"... A special gift, that is hard to recieve. It is certainly not a gift to those unsaved, but a great tragedy. For those of us who know the Lord, it's not so bad, except for pain involved - physical pain and the pain of those who love us that we leave behind.

Though, we shouldn't see death as "an escape for the poor and downtrodden"... we should do everything we can to help the poor and downtrodden, and to stay the falling state of this world. We are to be salt and light, giving the light of God to this world and, like salt, preserving goodness in this world, staving off the decay. We are not just to sit back and say... "Well, they were poor" or "they were abused, it is good that they died."
"We will never give up and despair, for we are on a mission from God." __ Hellsing, Vol. 2.

I hate to drag this off topic, but I have to say this:

Hey now, in my neighborhood the cats are very violent, It's not uncommon to hear glass breaking and trashcans being rammed into. And the way they scream and fight is just, rated NC-17. Those cats make some of the most violent screams i've herd in my ... OT...sorry

That was a bit uncalled for, Volt. You knew what he meant. Death on such a grand scale is not something I'd joke about either.

Back on topic, to all of you still feeling the effects of such a disaster, our prayers are still with you.

I like the little Santa hats on your horns, Volt. *hehe*

Speaking of earthquakes, did you all read about what happened in Iran? They say 20,000 dead. Earthquakes can be very devastating. It's strange when you think of how many earthquakes have occurred just this week. It makes you stop and think, doesn't it?

You see into the deepest part of me ---

beyond the fog I hide behind.

You cast your light upon the shadows

that stretch like cobwebs in my mind.

You ease the pain when I am hurting,

and morbid visions from my past

pierce into the realm of Reason

as though I danced on blades of glass.

You grant me strength when I have fallen

and, once again, I've lost my way.

You take my hand in Yours and lead me

into the promise of a brand new day.

You bring order to all my chaos,

yet set my well-laid plans awry.

You place me on a firm foundation ---

then give me wings so I can fly.

You sand away my roughened edges

and polish all the dullest parts

until I stand before Your presence...

a newly-sculpted work of art.

You see into the heart within me,

right through my motives and selfish will.

And yet, in spite of all You see

You say You love me even still.

Yeah. 20,000. How is that possible? I guess I'm lucky. I've felt many quakes (the '94 LA quake nearly threw my out of my waterbed) but never anything that did quite so much damage. Call it sick fascination, but I want to see the data on that one.

I just read the headline, OldPhil. Did you and Eirewolf feel this last earthquake? I remember the one in 73' in Sylmar. That was probably the biggest I've been through. My grandmother, who was staying from New Mexico ran outside screaming. She cut her trip short and went back to New Mexico. Living in Cali I got very used to earthquakes. I'm going to go read some more on the Iranian earthquake right now.

The one in Iran? No. We're a bit out side of the area of effect. ;) As for the other one, no too. We were in El Cajon visiting my parents (sorry milly, if I'd thought about it, we could have met you for lunch) and were too far south. Some of my friends in the bay area felt it (as well as at least one Franciscan here).

There's a large Iranian student population here at university -- I just an email from their society about it, they're asking for donations. I wonder whether anyone I know back in Manchester was affected... :(

Oh my santa hats...Yes I've spent countless hours rolling around laughing at them...Everyone else had a santa hat on their avitar (technomanser).

Regarding Earthquakes:
No, we don't bolt it down. We use 10 penny nails. j/k. We just don't hang things where they will be likely to fall, actually. That is, if we care about the thing, or if it's breakable.

Regarding Santa hats:
I was going to put a santa hat on Gandalf, but decided it wasn't worth the effort. I thought about it a little more, and couldn't imagine him with a hat like that anyway. Anyone wanna give it a try?
