Valve announces DoTA 2
The rumors and speculation can cease. Valve is making Dota 2, we've played it, and it's already amazing even though it's not coming out until next year. And we haven't yet laid eyes on Dota 2's biggest innovation: a radical approach to integrating the game's community back into the gameplay itself.
...I know I shouldn't be surprised they didn't announce Half-Life 2 Episode 3 but that doesn't help my level of disappointment with Valve. Still, it's great news if you love DoTA or any of it's successors/clones.

I have recently taken up playing prodigious amounts of League of Legends, so I am interested in seeing how this could be an improvement over LoL. Also, I wonder if Valve will charge for the game, as DotA has a long history of being free.

Valve has a much longer history of buying free mods and charging monies for them.

Usually not without significant enhancement and update, nor without hiring the creators of the mods themselves and giving them a cut of said monies.

True, but that doesn't help the consumers who now have to pay for them.
Also, meanwhile at Valve...

I don't know, people seem to be perfectly happy giving Valve money for Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, and Team Fortress.

True, but free doesn't hurt your wallet as much as not free does. But, then again, I'm not a fan of DoTA 2, so maybe they would be willing to pay money for it like I would be willing to pay money for one of several freeware games that has since been released with a price tag on it.

Q: How many Valve employees does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A: Just one, but he announces that he's started to work on it five years after you ask him to do it, and the date for completion gets pushed back another couple years as he's working on it.

Unless DOTA 2 has a small amount of content, like Valve's release of Alien Swarm, then they probably won't release it for free. I've never played DOTA, but I've never played a Valve game I didn't like, so I may look into DOTA 2.
And while all the images in this thread are making me ROFL, Valve has already said that Half-Life 2: Episode 3's release will be coincident with the Rapture, so it's not like they haven't announced a release date. :D
Also, is the thread's title intentionally "menwhile at Valve"?
