Video games that surprised you

Have you ever played a game where something in it happened that totally surprised you? I don't mean just the storyline / plot, but some of the game mechanics or settings.
I played an action RPG called "Divine Divinity" (yes, an odd name but nonetheless a very interesting game).
As with games of this sort, sometimes you can be sneaky and loot items / gold from chests / boxes scattered throughout the game map.
I recall that at the start of the game, when my character was still level 1, he came across a barrel with some items. I took them, and apparently they belonged to an NPC. Usually, these games ease you into the gameplay (I was only level 1 after all). However, the NPC gave me a stern warning and then proceeded to unleash a fireball at me!
My character was killed outright. So much for looting the chests, but I had a good laugh!

There have been a number of games that surprised me. I've been playing games nearly all my life, so there were a lot of moments in my earlier life that seem mundane now that weren't then. Discovering what the warp zone did, for instance, and figuring out that select could be for other things besides changing modes or selecting 2 players.
Along the lines of more normal surprises, MGS2 surprised me a fair bit. In particular, the
death of Olga. Moreso than naked Raiden, yes. Not just surprise, anger. I yelled at the TV when Solidus killed Olga.
my spoiler sense is tingling! I sense this thread will be filled with spoilers! ahhh whatever...
I'd say...
Dino Crisis 1, when the t-rex's head crashes through the huge window! that really got me!
also...
the original msg battle against psycho mantis with his memory card and control reading abilities. they should have really used that in other games man. like getting special items for having certain games on your memory card, it would have been a great way to get monsters in monster rancher. but I digress, that battle was epic! I didn't think I would actually have to switch controller ports! wow!
Katamari Damacy. How can a game be so weird, and yet so addictive?

you should say what your spoiler is about, actually. And I agree with you about Psycho Mantis. If I was in charge of development on a game, I'd do cross checking for saves for a LOT of things... If I could wrangle it, even crosschecking games made by other companies, and I'd drop references in there when I did.
