In the same vein, someone please tell me some quick ways to not be terrible. The few times I've jumped onto a server, I was completely at a loss at what to do beyond following the rest of my team and shooting mans.

My biggest suggestion for a starting TF2 player is to learn how to play Medic and learn how to play it well. The reason I suggest this is for two reasons, one you should try to get good with several classes and two Medics are probably the most important class in the game...yet no one wants to play as them. I've played quite a few games where the team I've been on have not had any Medics and we've gotten steam rolled. Sure, it's not a particularly glamorous class, but I can assure that if you get good at it, your entire team will be thankful to have you...plus it gives you an excuse to follow certain classes and pick up tips on how to play.
Anyway, now that I've concluded my lecture, onto the classes you are interested in. Youtube has a number of videos which shows you how to play these classes. So here they are:
Spy videoPyroScoutHeavyThat should get you started...oh one more thing about the Pyro...though it's my favorite class I have to just have to tell you...prepare to die a lot...yeah...
Edit: To blkmage: Youtube "TF2 How To Play..." with the class you like to play and you should come up with some videos that will help you drastically. Just practice what they suggest or get MSP to help you...that's what I did. In fact, perhaps MSP and I should drag some of you into a game with us and show you the ropes...we'll show/teach you how to play.

You've got to look inside yourself. Positate the negative.
Really though, you should start by singling out a couple classes and figuring out how to play them. Different classes have different jobs and different roles to play on the server. Engineers, for example, are defensive players through and through, kept behind allied lines, keeping safe what needs protecting]almost[/I]) never be anywhere except deep in enemy territory to remain effective, in your bases killing your dudes.
Which classes are you trying to use?

yeah if a heavy dosent have a medic to uber him or there is no medic to give you a quick heal things can go bad quickly.

This website is great. I've been studying it all day at work (since I have no work to do)

Thanks for supplying me with another bookmark.
TF2 wiki also has some stuff too, but I get the feeling TF2strategy has all of that and a little more...

This thread makes me want to get back on TF2. I miss being a medic.
Anyone want to schedule a CAA TF2 night?

Yes! This...this must be done. The only issue with it would be finding a server, however I'm sure we could find an empty or mostly empty server that could fit all of us. Then it would just be a matter of joining that game for the rest of us.

I would like to play this again. I wish they would show the PS3 version some love so it would be worth buying again.... I have the PC version but I own a mac book now so... can't play it
War Hawk is generally what I play now along with Battleground 1943 to fill my TF2 void... and they do a decent job of keeping me satisfied though... Watching those clips and stuff though... boy I wish they would update the PS3 version.

Echoing what Peanut said, being a good medic is key. Knowing when to stay on a single target (pocket medic) and when not to and break away and heal others (roaming medic) is necessary. Knowing when to pop ubers and having effective communication with your teammates is important.
Nobody here is probably not in any competitive leagues, so I recommend joining some simple pub servers (like 24-man) and playing on maps like 2fort makes things relatively easy. Maps like pl_badwater and stuff is where things start getting complicated, but a whole lot more fun. XD
A good class to start with is the Heavy or Pyro, as they can dish tons of damage in short ranges. However, don't be what is called a "W+M1" pyro. Never underestimate your shotgun! Knowing when to switch from the flamethrower or minigun to the shotgun on retreating enemies is always important.
EvilDaedalus on youtube has posted some very nice "How to play" videos. I suggest studying them.
And if you feel up to the challenge, give yourself a shot with trying out the spy, demoman, soldier, and engineer. Especially with the soldier, who is THE offensive push in almost all competitive play. The soldier has relative ease to play but has probably the highest learning curve of all the classes. Once you're good at juggling and aerial attacks (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhaTX5pP274) Then you're set at becoming a serious killing machine... but it takes lots of practice. Learning to take over their control and leading your targets is key in all of this. XD
So yeah, just keep practicing! And watch lots of competitive videos and learn how they play.

Though the Flaregun is probably my favorite weapon in TF2...I can tell you as a Pyro player that you have to use your shotgun. It's your best long range weapon by far...even though the reactions you get with the flare gun can be hilarious XD

I will always and ever be endeared to the demo man and the Engy. I've not started on those other classes, I started on these two and I've had some of my most spectacular moments on Xbox live playing these classes - particularly the Demo Man. Although working his weapons is hard to get the hang of.

Oh, I already had. I attempted to run it on my old system when I had a partciular bout of nostalgia for PC gaming. It didn't work. That was the day my computer finally failed me. Like I said in the Steam thread, add me. My handle is mightyGUEST
