What are the most underrated video games ever made? Here are some of my picks:
Super Dodge Ball
practically any Atari 2600 game (hey, they had some good ones!)
Intelligent Qube (did anyone own this game?)
Lemmings
Earthbound
Breath of Fire

I dunno, all the video games I like usually get their fair share of recognition.

I think Zelda II is extremely underrated.....all I hear is hate hate hate, but really it is its own game, and a great a challenging one at that (if you give it a chance, that is).

How is Lemmings underrated? The game is a cult classic. Anyone who knows anything about computer gaming in the 90s knows about Lemmings.

Breath of Fire was so underrated that it spawned four sequels and two of the games were ported to the Game Boy Advance and a third to the PSP.

Wait, what?

Still, that's no Final Fantasy.

As for underrated games with sequels, I'd like to nominate the Thief series.

Agreed, I've never played Theif, I'd say Dues Ex Invisible War and Golden Sun 1 and 2 , even both will be getting sequels.

Riviera: the Promised Land and it's 2 spin-off games. Mostly overlooked, but incredible gems. I've never seen any other games like them.

I agree 100%. I loved this game so much that Id just play hours on it while we were on the road. Of course this was a couple years back.

How about Shadow Hearts? Id liked it alot, but I really don't hear much of it. I dunno I probably did this wrong.

Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Under the Skin, God Hand, Everblue 1 and 2 (and its Wii spinoff Endless Ocean, called Forever Blue in Japan), all 6 Parodius games (Parodius, Parodius Da, Gokujou Parodius, Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius, Sekushii Parodius, and Paro Wars), Densetsu no Stafy, Sin and Punishment, No More Heroes, Alien Hominid, and Hotel Dusk: Room 215, as well as the Riviera, Shadow Hearts, and Trauma Center series. I've played all of them (except for Parodius 1 and Everblue 1.)

Oh my goodness, how could I possibly forget Hotel Dusk: Room 215?!

I will also say the Growlanser series.

I'm not sure that a game with an average score of 93 on Metacritic, with FIFTEEN reviews giving it a perfect score, qualifies as "underrated."

You can whine about "poor sales" but y'know 270,000 copies sold is NOT poor sales, and combined with the Wii sales (about 280,000 copies) means it's sold over half a million copies.

A highly-praised game with substantial sales does not equate to an underrated game, not in my book.

Bioshock is also pretty underrated...

And so is StarCraft. My goodness, you people need to play that game.

I don't know if Bioshock is all that underrated. Seems the hardcore gaming community is always wetting themselves over it. hehe.

I am a huge fan of the Lunar Series of RPGs... Minus the last one for the DS. Those games never seem to get love outside of a small cult following.

I have a feeling a lot of people in this thread are using underrated to mean "really awesome games that everyone who has played them loves but you probably don't know about it."

Which isn't what underrated means. I mean, come on, practically EVERYBODY who's played Okami loves it. It's sold quite well. Earthbound? Who DOESN'T love Earthbound? That's not underrated in the least. Trauma Center? Densetsu no Stafy? PLEASE. I haven't seen a bad review of those anywhere.

People. Underrated. Emphasis on RATED. If a game gets glowing review scores, it's NOT underrated! Here's a good example of an underrated game:

Wild Arms: Alter Code F.

Which didn't do very good with the critics at all.

Come on, I know you guys can do it! Use words for their intended meaning! Quit posting games that everyone praises and loves but are just not well known! There's already a thread for that. This thread is for underrated games.

Yeah, it was underrated. I don't mean by pro reviewers, but by people. A half-mil. isn't that much for a game that kicks Halo's butt.

Well...I would say that based on the first post of this thread that underated in terms of ratings isn't actually the point (why else would Earthbound and every Atarii 2600 game be listed in that post). I think the "underated" being referred to in this thread is involving the opinion of the public reflected in sales. Perhaps a better title would have been the "most underappreciated games of all time" or the "great games you've never played thread" or maybe even the "these games are awesome and you haven't played them SHAME ON YOU!!! thread..."but eh, who cares. We just had different interpretations as to what rocklobster meant when he made this thread, it happens...

With this being said, I think Okami (along with Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 and No More Heroes...yes I know I listed them...) is debatable. Okami sold very well for an original title that tried to do something different however compared to games like Halo 3, Zelda, etc...it didn't. In that way I would say its underated...of course with this logic you could argue the the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and the Metroid Prime trilogy are underated as well...of course, they have the advantage of being attatched to long running series and even if someone hasn't played them, they should have an idea of what those games are just by hearing their name.

So perhaps a better way to rate underated in the public's eye would be by name recognition alone. Have people heard about the game and do they know what it's about...

Going by the more comfortable (and I think, better) definition of "underrated" as "largely overlooked or ignored by the general public at the time of its release" rather than "consistently bad review scores" . . .

-Silent Hill
-Mega Man Legends series
-Phantasy Star IV (dunno if that one counts, but for some reason no one ever mentions it despite it being my personal favorite RPG ever)
-The Italian Job (the PS1 game based on the 1969 Michael Caine movie)
-Psychonauts
-Duke Nukem series (the original PC side-scroller trilogy, not the later series)

I believe Super Mario Bros. to be one of the most underrated games of our time.

And Super Mario Bros. 3.

Also, The Legend of Zelda is sorely underrated. Along with Ocarina of Time.

You're right. Totally underrated. But of course it doesn't help that the 2nd and third were the weakest installments and the first had the misfortune of being a Sega Master game.

I'm still peeved that the Phantasy Star franchise became an MMO.

And believe it or not, my very first online community was on a Phantasy Star website.

Final Fantasy 7 is the most underrated game in history.
