this is a simple task. Make a list of the games you think are the best, or have enjoyed the most in various different types of gameplay. Here are a few sections you can choose from.
Role playing
MMO
First person shooter
Third person shooter
Strategy
Action Adventure
Adventure games
Sports

Here is my list.
Role playing - Knights of the old republic 1&2 - This game at the time was a fantastic experience. I used to be a bit of a star wars fan back in the day. Now, gameplay wise it is not all that much, but it got a deep storyline, multiple dialogue options and you get to pretty much form your own path. I would like to give an honorary mention to FF6 and Chrono Trigger, but although they were great games, something about KOTOR just managed to inch a victory in this one.
First person shooter - Crysis - This is a worse one for me to judge. Firstly, Wolfenstein 3d is sparring for this place. That aside, I can't think of any remarkable FPS's. I know I enjoyed Golden Eye back in the day, but the experience points towards Crysis with it's beautiful graphics, stimulating gameplay, physics and great online options. Now, if it had a story to go with it then it would be much easier for a person like me. It's not a mindless shooter by a long shot, but the story perspective gets a bit loose for my taste.
Third person shooter - This one is easy. The original Max Payne is in my mind what set's the standard for a great third person shooter game. Nothing has rivaled it since it came out and if it came out today, it would still be a winner. A perfect example that graphics does not make the game, but a good example of how graphics can add to the environment if you have seen the cut scenes with their beautiful artwork and world class voice acting. Its gameplay is awesome, matrix style bullet time done better than any other game to date as far as I can remember. A story that involves deep, dark moments which really has an unrivaled atmosphere.
Strategy - Medieval Total war 2 - Ok, so with the wonderful stainless steel mod I can now play as Norway, Conquer most of Europe/Middle east while mixing strategy with real time strategy. What more could you ask for? Perhaps axe throwers, but I have had some crazy fun times with this game. A game I could play for hours and not even notice the time, and I can't wait for Empire Total War. Now, I really want to give an honorable mention to Vandal Hearts on the PS1 which is by far the best semi-chess like strategy game I have played as well.
Action Adventure - Zelda OOT - What I rate as the single best gameing experience of my life. I still remember the story, I got it at Christmas. I wrapped up the beautiful box it was sealed in and just played it for days, and days and even some more days. A fantastic game with a great, unpredictable storyline and just a fantastic composition of so many elements. The only thing that comes close is No More Heroes on the Nintendo Wii, but there is one problem. It is extremely short and thus no contest.
Racing - The original Grand Turismo on the PS1 - When this came out, everything else that involved racing seemed like a thing of the past. This was THE racing game and by far the racing game I have spent the most time on.
Platformers – Super Mario 3 – No platformers above, none at the flanks, just below this masterpiece of an 8-bit beast. Super Mario 64 is the only game that can have it's name mentioned near its presence when it comes to platformer games.
Other - The Original Twisted metal on the PS1 - This comes largely because of the fun multiplayer times I had. The concept itself is awesome, you got some cars with major battitude, machineguns and other weaponry. Go destroy the opposition. Fantastic game on both multiplayer and single player mode.
