this is a simple task. Make a list of the games you think are the best, or have enjoyed the most in various different types of gameplay. Here are a few sections you can choose from.

Role playing

MMO

First person shooter

Third person shooter

Strategy

Action Adventure

Adventure games

Sports

Racing

Other

_________________________________________________________

Here is my list.

Role playing - Knights of the old republic 1&2 - This game at the time was a fantastic experience. I used to be a bit of a star wars fan back in the day. Now, gameplay wise it is not all that much, but it got a deep storyline, multiple dialogue options and you get to pretty much form your own path. I would like to give an honorary mention to FF6 and Chrono Trigger, but although they were great games, something about KOTOR just managed to inch a victory in this one.

First person shooter - Crysis - This is a worse one for me to judge. Firstly, Wolfenstein 3d is sparring for this place. That aside, I can't think of any remarkable FPS's. I know I enjoyed Golden Eye back in the day, but the experience points towards Crysis with it's beautiful graphics, stimulating gameplay, physics and great online options. Now, if it had a story to go with it then it would be much easier for a person like me. It's not a mindless shooter by a long shot, but the story perspective gets a bit loose for my taste.

Third person shooter - This one is easy. The original Max Payne is in my mind what set's the standard for a great third person shooter game. Nothing has rivaled it since it came out and if it came out today, it would still be a winner. A perfect example that graphics does not make the game, but a good example of how graphics can add to the environment if you have seen the cut scenes with their beautiful artwork and world class voice acting. Its gameplay is awesome, matrix style bullet time done better than any other game to date as far as I can remember. A story that involves deep, dark moments which really has an unrivaled atmosphere.

Strategy - Medieval Total war 2 - Ok, so with the wonderful stainless steel mod I can now play as Norway, Conquer most of Europe/Middle east while mixing strategy with real time strategy. What more could you ask for? Perhaps axe throwers, but I have had some crazy fun times with this game. A game I could play for hours and not even notice the time, and I can't wait for Empire Total War. Now, I really want to give an honorable mention to Vandal Hearts on the PS1 which is by far the best semi-chess like strategy game I have played as well.

Action Adventure - Zelda OOT - What I rate as the single best gameing experience of my life. I still remember the story, I got it at Christmas. I wrapped up the beautiful box it was sealed in and just played it for days, and days and even some more days. A fantastic game with a great, unpredictable storyline and just a fantastic composition of so many elements. The only thing that comes close is No More Heroes on the Nintendo Wii, but there is one problem. It is extremely short and thus no contest.

Racing - The original Grand Turismo on the PS1 - When this came out, everything else that involved racing seemed like a thing of the past. This was THE racing game and by far the racing game I have spent the most time on.

Platformers – Super Mario 3 – No platformers above, none at the flanks, just below this masterpiece of an 8-bit beast. Super Mario 64 is the only game that can have it's name mentioned near its presence when it comes to platformer games.

Other - The Original Twisted metal on the PS1 - This comes largely because of the fun multiplayer times I had. The concept itself is awesome, you got some cars with major battitude, machineguns and other weaponry. Go destroy the opposition. Fantastic game on both multiplayer and single player mode.
Of two evils, choose neither - Charles Spurgeon.

Role playing: Tie between Earthbound and Chrono Trigger.

MMO: I don't really play MMO's.

First person shooter: Metroid Prime 3.

Third person shooter: Haven't played enough to judge.

Strategy: Age of Empires 2, I played this game a lot as a kid.

Action Adventure: Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. I like OoT quite a bit as well, but ALttP holds a more nostalgic position in my past.

Sports: NHL Hitz 20-02. It is the only sports game I found fun enough to play. In other words, it allows you to break just about all the rules.

Racing: I guess Burnout 2. I haven't really played enough to judge.

Eh...why not...I'll do this from the list of games I've actually played.

Role playing: Final Fantasy VI. Haven't finished it nor is it my favorite RPG I've played, however everything I've seen and played of it makes it deserving of this reward.

MMO: All the free ones. I'm cheap and have something against paying monthly to play a game I've already bought. So yeah I don't really play MMO's much...

First person shooter: Half-Life 2 and it's spin-offs (Portal, TF2 etc..). I love Half-Life 2 and Portal was easily the best 2 hours of gaming I've experienced in my life. TF2 is the ultimate time waster for me and Left 4 Dead is just brilliant. So yeah...go HL2...

Third person shooter: Gears of War 1 and 2. It wasn't the first game to integrate cover into its fire fights but it was one to take it from the shadows of a good gaming idea and make it something that all developers of Third Person Shooters now need to at least consider adding into their games. The manlyness of those chainsaw bayonets also helps. Oh and then there is the Mortar in Gears 2...which is one of my favorite weapons ever.

Strategy: Starcraft. 'Nough said.

Action Adventure: Legend of Zelda OOT. Great game and if I placed anything else in here I would be denying it of the recognition it deserves.

Adventure games: Sam and Max Season 1. It's me Hugh Bliss!

Sports: NCAA 2005. I wasted sooo much time on this game...

Racing: Burnout 3. Burnout 2's crash mode was fun. Burnout 3's crash mode took that fun and multiplied it by 4 (16 players in crash mode? NO WAY!!!). The Burnout series is probably the only game with a mode that I don't mind losing in.

Other: I guess I'll just use this section to give recognition to other games which just missed out on being choosen for their respective genre...here they are:

-Cave Story
-MagiNation
-Metroid Prime Trilogy
-Timesplitters 2
-Metal Arms
-No More Heroes
-Bioshock
-Sins of a Solar Empire
-Command and Conquer: Red Alert
-Tales of Symphonia
-Paper Mario 1 and 2

Just want to point out that I can't really count any Metroid Prime game being classified as an FPS.

Though they are more like adventure games than FPS games, they still are FPS's. That's what I love about them though:)
"Who is this?" they said to Me
'That the wind and waves obey
Come, let's hang Him on a tree
That His reign should pass away'
But here I am I say to you
Though you turn away, it is My will
To love you for forevermore
Peace be still, peace be still
