Valkria Chronicles

Has anyone else played Valkria Chronicles for the PS3? I got it for Christmas and I love it. It combines the systems of a RPG, strategy game, and third-person shooter. Its almost like the Fire Emblem games except there is no swords or mideval things. It's like set in WW2 times except that's not what the war is called there. It's also just as challenging as Fire Emblem.

So everyone who owns a PS3, I suggest you try this game out.

I'm having a blast with it, I just wish I could get my team I had in the demo already, although they did a nice job putting a little characterization in every unit.

Can't comment on the story thus far , I'm in chapter 6 or 7, but its ok.

Actually Im only on chapter 7, so yeah I guess I can't really say anything about the story as well.

Yeah I like how they were able to give each soldier different potentials that determine what they are like but how they will fight.

To be quite truthful I had a hard time with chapter 5.
I didn't know if I had to take out the boss tank, then I saw that I could possibly go around him. But that didn't work out so well so I just decided to use the Edelweiss to take about 75% of his tank's life points in one turn leaving him no room to attack or the anti-tank cannon for that matter. Then the rest of the enemies fled.
The storyline is a massive mess only rivaled by the modern sonic games. Now, I will agree that some of the characters are alright. However, there is a lot of potential gone to waste. Mixing WWII and the 'trying to be dramatic' type of anime is a deadly mix, paticulary if you involve some type of magic. Pluss, most of the major plot points where easy to see way before they did happen.

If you ask me, they should have just stuck with WWII action. However a major loss is the setting itself. Say if Russia decided to invade Finland. The result of the war would be pretty easy to predict and anything else than that would be laughable. If you ask me, a few quests to establish a few alliances here and there, a few much more tragic events and much less of the been-there-done-that-drama which takes place at the possibly worst times would have made what I see as a decent game into a classic.

I'm having a hard time in the game period. My strategies are working ok, but I keep getting D's.

Yeah I seem to be always getting D's now.

Im at chapter 7 and it is tough. Im going to have to level up my lancers to take on
Maximillion's tank and batomys.
@ Jaden Mental- Well whatever, I'd still like to play it because it is fun but terribly challenging. And plus I'd rather not waste my money by not playing it.

I mean I know it's not a regular shooter game that y'all may be accustomed to but it is challenging for me because normally I do not play shooter games.

Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad strategy game. However it's story is just crap, I think I went into some dept about this, but trust me, if it was not for spoilers and lack of patience, I could probably write an entire report on it. The strategy itself is quite enjoyable, however the rateings it got was way blown out of proportions.

It's not that hard, although you can be suprised from time to time. I was a few times, but I did not really get stuck anywhere in the game. Other than that the key word is precognition, master that and you will get plenty of B's and A's. I ended up with 3 casualties on my first playthrough. Granted some enemies and cannon weaponry placements can get annoying. It's all workable though.

All in all, the game is nice. I give it somewhere beetwen 6 and 7. If it had a cool multiplayer feature I would have given it an 8. If it had a workable story I would have bumped the grade up higher as well. Graphics are decent and aside from a few minor bugs, the gameplay is fluid.

Well I haven't really got into the story far enough, but I'll take your word for it.
I mean the main reason Im playing it is because it's a challenging game. I liked the Fire Emblem games so that's probably why I like this one.

Im sure it's all workable, but sometimes I can make poor judgements in using my CP, ammo, mobility and placement. I guess it just takes practice. I just hate it when I walk around the corner and like five cannons and shocktroopers are there waiting for me. I do see a good need in scouts but to be quite honest Im afraid they will get killed if I send them forward. So I mainly move my shocktroopers, Edelweiss, and lancers ahead. I know that this is not the way it was meant to be, but what can I do?

I liked the first GC fire emblem a bit, however I would have wished for a darker storyline and multiple path's in that too. Being the hero is only fun for so long in such a game.

That being said, scout's are very important in this game. They are the eyes for most of the tactical data and also spotters for snipers or re-enforcements. If things absolutely get's too hard, then you can level your units up above level 10 which makes them elites. No big changes for most of them, but they get to walk a bit more and some better stats.

The Edelwiess at the start is nearly a liability in my mind. Slow, clunky, short range support fire and will always be killed by just one fortunate lancer shot from an unexpected position. At the end, it get's a bit better. However you learn to always have an engineer nearby. Trust me, the 'hard' part is yet to come.

It's all about positioning in the end. Makeing sure enemy snipers get the worst possible deal in terms of sight. Useing cover against chargeing enemies. The Edelwiess primary use in my opinion is to basicly mow over the sandbags in enemy bases if the grenades would not do much good. The Edlewiess in the end is not much stronger than your average enemy medium tank so be careful with it.

As for snipers, I'd say have one or two depending on your mission. They get very reliable once they get accurate, however in terms of moveing forward they are useless to put it mildly. They move like slugs on acid.

Sometimes in order to capture the enemy base you gotta be cheap. There is one mission later on which you can finish in two turns and earns you about 47750 xp each time since it is a skirmish mission. Takeing a base the cheap way is a great way of finishing quite a few missions. I have done this tons of time since all you need to do is get the enemies close to the flag dead and just be in range to capture it. If you bypassed 15 enemies by sneaking, it does not matter. You win simple as that. Even if one or two of your units get's injured, it does not matter as long as no enemy walk close to them.

Oh, and always upgrade your weapons.

First I would like to say thank you to Jaden. You have revealed somethings that I did not see before.

Yeah it wasn't dark enough for me either, however I enjoyed it. I also played the Wii Fire Emblem. Although it could have been made on the GC, it was still good. I kinda liked that one a little bit more because of the length of the game.

Oh really? Nice then I will level up my units to level 10. Right now my lancers are at 8 and the others 7.

Yeah I knew to use the engineer to repair the Edelweiss. And yes, I know about the positioning of the Edelweiss is also important. I usually try to keep it's back to the wall and out of range from enemy fire. If it gets hurt then I'll use my Engineer.

However I have one question about the Engineer. How do you restock Lancer's and Sniper's ammo? Ive tried to do it, but I do not see an action prompting this like the one to repair the Edelweiss.

It's all about positioning in the end. Makeing sure enemy snipers get the worst possible deal in terms of sight. Useing cover against chargeing enemies. The Edlewiess in the end is not much stronger than your average enemy medium tank so be careful with it.
Yeah the Edelweiss is a getting more of a burden sometimes. And that sucks because Im already facing medium tanks! Is there not something in the R&D factory that can strengthen the Edelweiss?

As for snipers, I'd say have one or two depending on your mission. They get very reliable once they get accurate, however in terms of moveing forward they are useless to put it mildly. They move like slugs on acid.
Yeah I rarely move my snipers now and if I do then I'll just make them retreat and deploy them at a different base. This makes it go a lot faster.

Sometimes in order to capture the enemy base you gotta be cheap. There is one mission later on which you can finish in two turns and earns you about 47750 xp each time since it is a skirmish mission. Yeah Ive done this in a earlier skirmish battle many times on normal and can just do it only using 3 CP. I wish I could do the skirmish battle that you're talking about, but I guess I'll just have to get through some more of the operations.

Oh, and always upgrade your weapons.

And yeah I always try to make sure that Ive upgrade everything.

I wish that I could get to chapter 8. Im still having trouble with chapter 7. Okay so Ive managed to in the game for many turns, but unfortunately I haven't been using them and my CP wisely. So could you post your strategy by turns of what you did? Okay okay Im sorry for asking for help but Im stumped and I seem to be having trouble blasting the radiators while Selveria is around. I think I should blow them up before she comes. Do you know what to do?

And also as I asked before could you guys tell me how to reload my lancer's and sniper's ammo from my engineer?

Hmm, sounds like a game that I would love to play, if I had a PS3.

Since I don't. I just wait for the anime to come out. ;)

Oh wouldn't that be nice. Oh wait really? It's going to be an anime? Man I can't wait for it then!

To be honest I got this game on the spot. I didn't plan on buying it beforehand(Well I didn't know about it.), but once I saw it I knew that I had to get it because I haven't seen many RPGs on the PS3 yet. So I'll take what I can get.

But yeah, in case you ever find that you have a PS3 in the future look for the game. The main reason I have a PS3 is because my PS2 broke.

Im kinda tempted to buy another smaller PS2 so that I may play my DDR games again and also play the first two Guitar Hero games.

Chapter 8 and 7 are not really hard game wise. Wait til you get to chapter 15+.

The two hardest levels in the game, I won't spoil anything. However one involves a girl with a gun and the other involves a tank and some stations.

When and if you finish those. Then you will see how laughably easier the other stages was compared.

I love this game. I have beaten it, and once you do you can replay the campaign (and redo any battle if you want to get a higher rank), and you unlock hard difficulty for skirmishes. Yeah, that is what I am doing right now with the game.

You need at least 9 turns to beat it, mainly because you are waiting for the Batomys to expose its radiators three times.

It is lot easier once you realize a few things.

First, the gun turrets are the only means of interception fire for the Batomys. Get rid of them first (lancers are your best means here), and then you can run around the Batomys without any worries.

Second, Radiators can be destroyed with one grenade lobbed into them. Use scouts to quickly get on the Batomys when a radiator is exposed, destroy one, then run and hide behind a wall.

Third, Selvaria will come out no matter what once you destroy two radiators, but she only moves to stay near one radiator, the one to the Batomys's left. So destroy that radiator first, then the back radiator second. This leaves the right radiator last, which Selvaria cannot see or guard once she settles next to the Batomys. So place a scout behind a wall on the slope. By then, the last radiator will be exposed, and you can safely run the scout to it and lob a grenade in there.

After all radiators are destroyed, you still have to destroy the Batomys itself. Just let your lancers repeatedly fire at it until it is destroyed. Remember your tank can block Selvaria's interception fire as well.
AXDC wrote:And also as I asked before could you guys tell me how to reload my lancer's and sniper's ammo from my engineer?
Walk/run the engineer near them, and they should automatically reload. You don't need to press a button do this. You will hear a sound effect once you reload someone, as well as an icon popup on the character. You can reload tanks with the engineer as well.

Omega beat me too it, Sorry for taking so long to respond, Here are some more pointers:

Keep an engineer near the Edelweiss, and March the Edelweiss itself right up to that Death Star of a tank, Let it hit you, with the Engineer right there you should be fine.

From the third base deploy a lancer and Engineer to restock his ammo and hide out in the nearest cover south of the second base.

Give the Batomys a shell shower and that should be it.

Actually Im sorry you guys, but I beat chapter 7 yesterday and Im on chapter 11 now. But thanks for trying to help!

The chapter 9 battle wasn't really a battle. I easily got an A on it in only like 2 turns.
Now Chapter 10 was a little bit more dificult but I beat it.
