Being unable to finish games
PostPosted: Sun Jan 27, 2008 8:01 pm
by Sammy Boy
I'm wondering if anyone is in a similar situation to myself. I have games, but it seems I never finish one before I start another. Maybe I lack "dedication" or there are just lots of other things I had to do (work, studies, housework, etc.).
The games I have finished so far are few, and most are really old games:
- Super Mario Bros
- Kung Fu
- Double Dragon 2, 3, and 4
- Contra
- Warcraft
I also almost finished Revenant, and old RPG for the PC, but towards the end it became a massive dungeon crawl, and I lost interest. But, perhaps the ending is worth it?
Anyway, I would be keen to find out if anyone else is like myself when it comes to being unable to finish games, and the reasons why. Hahah.

This sometimes happens to me too. Like recently Ive been wanting to finish Folklore and Uncharted, but I have NO time to do it. Ive got a research paper, reading Crime and Punishment, practicing the piano, Chemistry, and tons of other stuff I have to do.
But you were saying you weren't dedicating enough to them not that you didn't have enough time, this happens to me when I was playing games. I would drop them and then many months later figure out I didn't finish it and then try to finish it.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary.
Pyramid Level.
Obstacle Course.
Haven't played the game in months because of that.
Other than that, starting new games before finishing old ones is normal for me. I really, really suck at gaming, so playing just one and dying constantly can get old...fast.

Dropped Half Life 2 roughly around Nova Prospekt, and Commander Keen 2 and 3 near the end, fighting against impossible odds. I did beat Golden Axe. The arcade version. The last two levels of the console port are dead to me, and shall not be named. And a handful of other titles picked up at friends' houses.
If I buy a game, though, I tend to finish it. Not necessarily the 100% TRUE END, but the credits will roll.

I usually play through a game till I get really stuck, then go play a different game and eventually (or well, USUALLY) get back to that one game, and end up beating it. Now, I just end up sitting on Warcraft all day. Don't necessarily even do anything, but it's because I know real life people who come on that I chat to, so yeah. A rare thing for me to sit down and play console games now >_> I'll get to the others though, eventually >_>

As much as I am CAA's resident Touhou fanboy, I admit that I cannot finish any of the games (truly finishing the game means Normal difficulty or higher, WITHOUT using continues. Good luck).

It's the story of my life. I think the only game I've ever finished is Pokémon Yellow, but even then I haven't caught all the Pokémon yet. ^^; I think the reason is that I get too stressed out when I play, so I don't play enough to actually finish the game.

It's increasingly rare that I finish a whole game.
I was working my way through Guilty Gear X2 for a long time, unlocking characters, gathering up all the endings, etc. Then I lost my save data. I don't really play Guilty Gear X2 anymore.
I did beat Chrono Trigger, but I don't remember if I got everything there was to get.
I'm working on the first Phoenix Wright game. Only a couple more chapters to go...

I've bought a few that I never did finish, but mostly because they we're just so uninteresting and boring to me. So I sold 'em.
However, I am still trying to force my way back into the subway of Silent Hill 3. I took a dare to play the game at midnight with the lights off and everything. Still trying to pick the CD back up. So far unsuccessful. I doubt I’ll ever beat it. :<
And now, Resident Evil 4. Partially because I’ve been so busy lately to play it and because of the chainsaw zombies. Evil, evil chainsaw zombies. I might be able to beat it because as far as scare levels go, it’s nothing like Silent Hill 3, but it’s still pretty hard.

Usually, I don't play a game unless there's a good storyline with sufficient cut-scenes. I'll get so attached to the characters (in most situations, anyway), that I'll power my way through the game until I beat it. This works well for most games with one exception: FPS games. Metroid Prime, Half Life, all that stuff. I get so tense...
I'm stuck on Ravenholm in HL2. >.< I believe that F&C has my reason pretty well described right here:
FishandChips from chat wrote:FishandChips 01:51 - Oh.
FishandChips 01:51 - God.
FishandChips 01:51 - I hate.
FishandChips 01:51 - Ravenholm.
RidleyofZebes 01:52 - the only good thing about ravenholm is father what'shisname.
FishandChips 01:52 - XD
FishandChips 01:52 - Yeah.
FishandChips 01:52 - He was awesome.
FishandChips 01:52 - I just hated it because I was like.
FishandChips 01:52 - "Well, at least Half Life follows the rule of zombies."
FishandChips 01:52 - "They're all slow and lumbe-WHAT THE CRAP IS THAT ON THE ROOF TOPS?"
FishandChips 01:53 - "OH GOD!"
FishandChips empties a clip.
FishandChips 01:53 - "HOLY CRAP THEY'RE COMING."
FishandChips 01:53 - That's why I hate Ravenholm.

For the most part, no. I tend to wait until I have several days of vacation together, then rent a title and beat it as quickly as possible. This generally works, though I failed in the case of Dragon Quest VIII. I have yet to rent it again to finish the last few dungeons.

I usually play a game, get really into it for a couple of days to a week, suddenly lose interest or get to a difficult part and stop playing, pick it up a few months later and totally forgot where I was, what was happening, or what I was supposed to be doing, so I start again from the beginning.
I prefer shorter games (like Final Fantasy 10 is my favorite RPG). Longer games tend to laaaaaag and you just lose interest.

I hate starting something and not finishing it. Even if the game turns out to be bloody hard I will still be inanely persistent. It's very rare that I start a game I don't finish. Even if it really sucks.
And no, I'm not one of those gamers who plays to get "everything" in a game. Too much extra time in my opinion, and so many more games to play. More often then not I'll stick with the main story only and leave the extra stuff alone, with some exceptions.

I get completely obsessed with certain games for a short time. Right now its Starcraft, for a while it was KOTR, for a long time it was Pokemon (I was young, okay?) I never really get very far in these games, I'm just obsessed for a short time. Its kinda annoying, really.

GI Joe the Atlantis Factor. Easier than 15 years ago but still hard to get through. I hope to beat it before action film is released next year....

As CAA's OTHER resident Touhou fanboy, I can say that I've beaten a few on Normal without continues (3x on IN, 1x on EoSD), but it's an accomplishment, to say the least. Keep it up, you'll get it some day.
I'm horrible about not finishing games, btw. I've got 10 RPGs laying around that I've invested at least 20 hours into, but haven't beaten...

I am currently unable to finish FF12 (for the 2nd time, granted), mostly because I insist on beating every boss this time. And since I can't beat zodiark, I'm hosed.

I generally finish the games I start, with the exception of a few that I just totally lost interest and didn't really even want to finish. Sometimes I'll hit a really hard spot or lose interest and abandon the game for a while but I'll come back and pick it up later and finish it. I hate not finishing games. It leaves this overshadowing feeling on me that I can't shake, haha. Even now I'm trying to get myself to go back and finish the last battle in Baten Kaitos, but everytime I think about it I don't want to, do I never do, but it keeps looming over me. xP

Coincidentally, I'm also doing a relaxed second run-through (though I'm trying to beat hunts as I go) with the goal of finishing optional bosses. But I can guarantee I won't finish the game completely. Yiazmat's 50 million HP is too much for me.

I love RPGs, but I've never beaten any of the ones I've played (with the exception of the Zelda games, which are action-RPGs).

Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance- Save battery died P:
Any Final Fantasy game sans VII- Dunno why.

As for games I haven't finished..well, wait let me rephrase that, I get lazy and stop it to start another game that recently came out... hehe ^__^ One game though I will never finish is Dirge of Cerberus because that game was lame. It wasn't even worth starting IMHO...though I am sure some will think otherwise.
Other unfinished titles: Folklore (Haven't had the time to progress due to work), Tales of Legendia, and Okami which I would be finished with had I not have started Folklore so I'll need to restart!

Oh My Gamers! With all Final Fantasy Games it always leads to one thing: Leveling up a TON until you can level up no more than owning all higher weapons, armor, magic (and was anyone else alittle T'ed that you had to buy the magic this time around!?), etc and lastly! have all Quickenings!!!!!!!!!!! I stress this! ^__^
Though I've noticed in all FF games once you've tried defeating a Boss four or five times you can time their moves so, when the most critical attacks come you can use you're curas, haste, protect, shell, etc...or just use a quickening! Me loves the Quickenings!
aside from the No MP thing >__< Not to mention always having someone heal which leaves only two people to fight
oy vay...ok I am so going off on a tangent here.... will zip it now!

For my current team, I have all the characters over level 90 (my core 3 are at 99), I have all armor, major weapons, spells, technicks and quickenings.
I can get TO him just fine, and I can get him most of the way dead. But when he's around 25%, he stops taking damage and I cannot heal my guys fast enough! What do you do when he's invincible? Just wait him out? Maybe I'm simply too impatient and/or overconfident. How do you keep your guys from dying?

According to the official strategy guide, (which I quote so that if any of this information does not work, it's not my fault. I myself have never bothered with Yiazmat) you do not have to defeat him in one setting. You can supposedly exit the battle, save, come back, and keep fighting him sans the HP you already took off.
Anyone else whose actually tried this feel free to correct me?

Probably. But I'm going to wait to fight him next. I'm working on Zodiark right now. I killed off the other huge dragon that way (3 sittings, I think).

[quote="Mithrandir"]I can get TO him just fine, and I can get him most of the way dead. But when he's around 25%]
Does he cast a Paling or does he have some kind of special effect that stops all physical damage? Non-elemental Technicks can pierce through most kinds of barriers and they can do some decent damage if properly chosen. You can also try to do damage through the randomized elemental weakness... if Zodiark has any vulnerabilities normally.
What accessories are you using? I'd strongly recommend Bubble Belts over casting Bubble. The spell's HP-doubling effect can be interrupted by new actions, whereas the accessory's cannot (and I assume you'll want to be swapping those around to negate incoming status effects). Does Zodiark cast elemental attacks? You might be able to reduce the necessary healing if you have Black Masks or anything that can absorb what he's casting.
