best fighting game series ever!

Let's get ready to rumble!
Which fighting series do you like best. Note: I excluded sports-based fighting games like Ready to Rumble and Raw vs. Smackdown because those are not really "fighting" games and are actually based on sports. I also excluded games like Urban Reign and Yi-Ar Kung Fu because those aren't series.

In my opinion, it'd defiantly be either Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. And you can't forget Soul Calibur, but that's too mystical.
But you know, Mortal Kombat got kinda boring after Deadly alliance, but took a big boost after Armageddon.
But, you can't go wrong with Akuma, so I'll say Street Fighter.
OOC: And it's SmackDown! vs RAW.

Personally, the Street Fighter series holds the most memories and will always be my favorite... I still play them to this day. This is a very hard thing to do, because I have so many that I like... but next would be Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Tekken, Guilty Gear, the King of Fighters/Fatal Fury, Streets of Rage and DOA. Marvel vs Capcom, those games were fun too... NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is a fun game too, it has a lot of fighters from SNK's games. Haha... too many to name. The only one I never cared for is Mortal Kombat.

From the poll choices, I pick Tekken. Good stuff.
One of my favorite fighting games is Guilty Gear X2. I wouldn't say that it's my favorite fighting game series though, because the rest of the games aren't really that great.

I don't have a particular favorite, but I AM wondering why Mortal Kombat is not in the poll. XD

Street Fighter, particularly the Alpha series, given thats the only one I'm any good at it.
Virtua Fighter does come in at a second, though.

Melty Blood is not on this list.
I am disappointed in all of you.

LOL I never got to play that one... heard it was something like Guilty Gear, but never found the port anywhere. I guess I need to find myself a copy on ebay or something and give it a try sometime. :p

Where's Super Smash Bros.?
It should be on this list cus it's cool.
Anyway, I'm not really sure which to choose since I like the street fighter series (especially Marvel Vs. Capcom) but I also really like Super Smash Bros (Melee). I mean I spent over a hundred hours playing it in the last five years and it's one of my most played GameCube games.
I'll probably vote "other" (Super Smash Bros).

Really 2D and 3D should be judged separately since the gameplay and overall design philosophy are very different.
By series, meaning judging the line of iterations of a franchise, then for 2D fighting the King of Fighters series easily is on the top for continually refining and adding elements to gameplay, in-depth characters, etc.
I would give honorable mentions for 2D in terms of series to Samurai Shodown, Last Blade, and Street Fighter Alpha.
But really the best 2D fighting games I would give to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Street Fighter III: Third Strike. They easily are the most refined and balanced in 2D fighting gameplay design, art, and striking characters. Unfortunately, they are also the 2D fighting games not many people played....
For 3D, really, from a pure technical depth perspective, Virtua Fighter has always been on top. But, I think the Tekken series did a fine job of getting some nice depth, yet some entertaining and outlandish styles to keep more casuals entertained.
Soul Calibur series, which I love, has fantastic art, music, and graphics, but I cannot raise it to either the VF or Tekkens series. The moves to quick and powerful to allow a skilled player to actually better a newbie-buttonmashing player. And there is constant imbalance of characters.
So yeah.... I'll stop. Fighting games are by far my favorite genre....

The Jump Stars series is pretty awesome even if you can't speak Japanese (I can't).

Street Fighter all the way...though I fear the worst for SF4,I fear that it will turn into another Street Fighter EX type of game.

Shadow of the Colossus was really AWESOME!! The spiritual stuff in it was the only thing that I didn't really care for. Besides that, it's clean! No swearing and no nudity.(Unless you count a naked baby.) As far as violence goes, when you stab a Colossi black blood comes out, but it looks like black smoke.

Although I agree that Mortal Kombat should be on the poll, I'm afraid my vote will be cast elsewhere.
Did you know that the Dragon Ball Z Budokai fighting games have been around since the SNES days? They've come a long way... But, since there's no DBZ option on the poll, I'mma vote for Street Fighter.

You could add it, Ark. But I really don't care for that series. Also, that's what Other is for--all the games I forgot to list.

Super Smash Brothers and Soul Calibur are probably my two favourite fighting game series. Both benefit a lot for having pretty comprehensive quest/story modes. For simple fun and enjoyment, Mario games almost always deliver. For graphics and simply gorgeous fighting, Soul Calibur is great.
