Now that I have Uncharted...

Just picked up Drake's Fortune yesterday... Man, this game is incredible... It looks better than gears, it has Traversal like Shadow of the Colossus, gunfights like gears, incredible lighting, indoor and outdoor environments with sunrises and sunsets and moving, changing clouds, the most complex in-game animations ever done, an awesome adventurous treasure hunting indiana jones type story...

Man... I'm in love with this game... The water... the hair... everything looks gorgeous in this game, and the bonuses give it plenty of replay value... It has a gorgeous framerate (a crapload better than gears ) almost no pop-in... And this is FUN! A lot of fun... Varied tasks with traversal puzzles, intense firefights, old fashioned brawling, and indiana jones type escape sequences... It's funny, the acting isn't bad, and there are satisfied moments at regular intervals, and this game is so not Lair, lair doesn't even deserve to be on the same system...

10 out of 10... The first game this gen I could say that about... Not gears (which has choppy framerates and horrible horrible pop-in), not Heavenly Sword (which has somewhat repetitive God of War style gameplay that is thankfully interrupted far too infrequently with Kai's crossbow sequences) not folklore (could a little more voice acting and fully rendered cut scenes have hurt them? And a full install to avoid the load times?), not Halo 3 (same-old same-old with a couple new things), not Dead Rising (Come on, I like it, but would you ever expect me to rate a sandbox game that highly?) This is it...

I'll have video reviews up on my site in a couple weeks or so... for this and HS, Folklore, Resistance, etc...

Agh you lucky dog! I don't play many games but I would go out and buy a PS3 just for this game!!! There are a few select games I love and this looks right up my alley! I've had my eye on this for a while.

Just saving for school so can't really make myself go buy a PS3 for this atm but I would like to someday. Looks fricken awesome.

Gears never functioned with choppy framerates for me... *shrug* The game does look good, though.

Good to hear that. I've been following Uncharted for awhile, simply because I love platformers, and it's good to see that the genre's still getting some love.

It's better than Folklore? I loved that game, I need to get this ASAP.

Well, I only played Co-op, so that may have had something to do with it... I'm not sure UE3 scales very well when you have to render multiple cameras at once... They've always been PC developers, so the demands of Splitscreen may not have been one of their strongsuits...

Now that I think of it, I'm sure it will be a problem on UT3 as well... Crap...

Who knows, since I've never even seen anyone play it alone, the Pop-in may not even be a problem on single player mode on Gears...

Don't you mean... "Naughty Dog"

Nah, I'm already too many creatures and mythological plant creatures as it is... Alien mandrake cat duck... Adding dog to the list would be pushing it near the bounds of "a bit too much."

I played the single player campaign Gears of War on the PC, with my new powerful PC rig in 1900x1200 with the highest settings available and in vsync, and I did not see it go below 60 fps nor any pop-in. I take that as evidence that in the end Epic is at heart a high-end PC developer and there UE3 engine still best performs in the traditional PC architecture with high amounts of system and video RAM.

That being said, and to bring this back to Uncharted, I found the overall graphics package to be, well, better in Uncharted after playing the demo. For example, I found its lighting/shadowing effects, water, and plant rendering to be very impressive. And using a larger color palette in art design helps too.

One thing I like a lot about Uncharted that it takes from Gears is the covering system for gun combat. To me this system makes sense for a dual-analog controller setup, and it is good to see developers adopt it.

And I guess you got your copy from Gamestop, Bobtheduck? I was under the impression the release date is this coming Monday.

Hades, yeah (was gonna say "Heck yes" but honestly... Napoleon Dynamite needs to die, so it can be worth the nostalgia in a decade) I nearly always buy my games from gamestop, bought it day 1!

What bugs me, though, is while Naughty Dog gives props to Epic for the cover system, they don't give props to Namco, who were the first ones to use Cover with Time Crisis in first person and later with Killswitch in third person which is more like Gears / Uncharted... Gears really took Namco's designs and just made the rest of the game more fun (as did Uncharted)

I wish they would finish the little ARG-like internet game they had set up for this. I checked back to day to see if they finished it and it still says come back soon to finish the adventure -_-

Perhaps, but I think it was really GEoW that almost "reintroduced" the cover-system in a way that people went "Oh snap! That's awesome!"

I was referring to my own site, not CAA. That's cool, though.
