I can't believe there hasn't been a discussion of this game since it was still a Gamecube game! This game is probably the most fun thing on the Wii! Who's played it yet?
Man... This game is so fun. It still has RPG elements, but it focuses more on the platforming aspect. It's a 2d platformer, much like the original mario games, and there are tons and tons of inside jokes.
Anyone who has a wii and does NOT have this game needs to have some sense slapped into them. This is a system seller, for me. I need a wii for this game alone. Only thing I can complain about is... Poor Luigi, he's the butt of a lot of jokes in this game... Luigi was awesome, I always liked him better than mario, but this game makes him out to be really stupid. Oh well...
If you have a wii, go out and get this game NOW! If not, make friends with someone who owns one. And buy this game for them if they don't have it. They'll thank you for it. And you'll just be grateful to have a Wii owning friend.

I love this game so much! And as for Luigi,
He can't be that stupid to build a robotic spaceship. I almost died in that level.
I love the great tribute to old school platformers, and yet it still has great innovative elements as well. The storyline is very fun and interesting too. And of course as in any Parer Mario game the characters are done wonderfully. Definitely an excellent game.

Pretty awesome overall. I think I would have liked a little more work with the bosses but overall, yes, definetly worth playing through (currently in the next to the last world).

I was curious about this, so I may as well ask here. What specific RPG features are retained? I liked the system in the Paper Mario games but the central idea (being flat) didn't matter to me so I didn't care when I heard about a platformer. But hearing it retains some RPG elements, I'm much more interested.

Let's see if I can recall...
Your characters have HP which goes down when you take hits, and is restored by using items. You level up through battling, and thus increase your HP or attack. You have a party if interchangeable characters that have unique skills. Also, there's special attack items you can use from your inventory like fireballs and stuff. The RPG elements are a lot weaker than in the previous PM games, though, which makes sense because it's half-platformer now.
Anyway, I love this game! The writing is hilarious, and dimension flipping is quite satisfying.

So would it be fair to call it an action RPG? I like those too, so I may have to pursue this game.

Yes, though I suppose I would call it a platformer first, and an action RPG second. Still, there is a lot more backtracking and exploring involved than in your typical platformer, and the game unfolds like an actual story, so in that sense it is a lot like an RPG.
