Well, kinda fake. Just read on^^
I found these 2 pages on Wikipedia when looking through Final Fantasy Advance/Legend when I found out from another topic, that they were misstitles of other games to make it look good in North America... Well, from the old Super Mario Bros game that we all know and either love or don't really like, it's ONLY a North America version...

Right, the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 was very much like the first game with some extra twists. It has actually been released in America twice, once on the Super Mario All-Stars collection for the Super Nintendo (under the title "The Lost Levels") and also on Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the GBC, though the latter had a lot of stuff taken out.
Interesting to note a lot of the enemies in Doki Doki Panic eventually became standard characters in the Mario universe.

Now that I think of it too, Doki Doki would make alot more sense... I mean, there's lots of deserty levels and sand, flying carpets everywhere, and stuff like potions to make doorways instead of genie lamps, doesn't make too much sense :/

You just know knew...? Xp
But yeah, such themes would make a bit more sense in the original game, though as Nate said, it is interesting how many of the enemies wound up in later games.

I went to a website once that went off on how our SMB2 was better than the original Doki Doki Panic... It may be prettier than DDP, but DDP had something I really wish our SMB2 would have had: Separate path and save file for each character... Instead of switching off characters whenever you went to a new level, you played each character through their own path, which was unique to each.

Wow...So that's where the Shy-guys came from, huh? XD It's surprising that characters that weren't even meant to be part of the Mario series ended up becoming so prominent in other Mario games, like Mario RPG, Mario Tennis, etc. XD

It's also funny to note that in appearance, the only difference between toad and stout papa is essentially the head.
Even though it wasn't originally a mario game, it's still a classic , and we as americans didn't miss much as far as the real SMB2 is concerned. IMO, anyways.
Besides, I love the shy guy enemies. I can't imagine mario without them.

I actually liked Mario 2 the most of the first 3. Dunno why. It was just weird.

I enjoyed this game and I really am surprized it was American-made.

This is the first time I've heard this, actually. It does explain the differences, and similarly I find it interesting how certain elements were built into the Mario universe.
I enjoyed this game to a certain degree, but have never played it much due to the fact that it doesn't have a points system. After beating it once there just isn't any motivation, without numbers to guage your progress or provide something to pay attention to other than the game itself.

It wasn't. It was Japanese made, and then American editted. The editted version was actually later released in Japan, when it was then titled Super Mario Bros. USA, and that's how it became accepted as canon.
