CAA: Christian Anime Alliance

I wanted to hear your guys' opinions on this topic. Do you think that, with the right restraints and knowing when and when not to play, that world of warcraft is good? Or is the addiction too strong and WoW is evil and should be taken offline? Please state your opinion then give a GOOD reason why. Please don't just say: "I think WoW is good because I like to play it. It is fun."

Okay, there is NO addiction to WoW. It's not a drug. I figured you should be more worried about the magic in it than anything. Regardless, if you become addicted to a game, you shouldn't play it. Period.

That's exactly what I'm thinking! If you're willing to sit in front of a computer to play a game that will in no way help your future all day, then you have some really bad priority issues. I just can't stand people who sit there and blame video games for everything. There's something called parents out there that play a role in this too. It's upto the parent to set the rules. Now I understand that kids don't listen to their parents (I ignore htem all the time <.<;;), but it's also up to the parent to enforce the rules they set! Right?

Content wise, it really depends on your personal convictions on how you feel about magic in games. As for being addicted, people just need to learn personal responsiblity and self-moderation for once. I hope we stay far far away from what China has done with WoW.

Now personally, I just cannot stand MMORPGs... I give them the benefit of the doubt everytime, but they end up just boring me to death. That's just me, though.

There are people who can become addicted to anything, and the combination of cooperative gaming with online socialization make WoW something that many have become addicted to. Yet, if not misused it can be a fun and harmless game. Should we take coffee off the market because addiction to it is common? What about the people who become addicted to more obscure things? My father was told of a woman who was addicted to pasta and had huge problems because of it, to use one of the odder examples, and people have been known to be addicted to even odder things. There have been many games people have been addicted to, yet stopping their sale is not usually contemplated because the use of this things is an issue of personal responsibility. To stop a game just because some people are addicted destroys the ability of the responsible users to enjoy themselves and, in my opinion, does us a disservice by acting like all people are children who have to have their activities monitored and are incapable to making their own decisions. The bulk of the population should be able to have fun with a game without allowing it to gain control of their lives and, without being belittling in any way, those who can't probably need help to gain control of their lives and desires.

Playing a game, even for long periods of time, is not a sin. Letting it take over your life and subconciously or not putting it before God is. I myself have been known to get so absorbed into the world or story of a game and play it non stop for several days in a row, but for me, it's a passing thing. I'm immensely enjoying what the game has to offer, but I'm not actually addicted. There is a difference. And, of course, gaming would definately never come before my other priorities.

I have to admit that I'm a gamer. A geek. I love games, especially RPGs and everyone knows that RPGs take forever to beat. I've been know to spend days playing games without sleep just to reach the next part of the story line, but I did so knowing that I would have a chance to sleep. Also, I did so knowing that when I did sleep or I did play, it didn't interfere with my plans. Also, for the longest time I got poor grades in school because I didn't do homework and a lot of time it was blamed on gaming. I am a perfect example of this because it was NOT gaming that made me not do my homework. I'm an unorganized person and when I get home I'd sometime forget a book or I'd forget my homework or forget what we had to do and since I couldn't do it, I began doing what I would of done when I finished. And that was playing games.

(also, a side note, I play games because there is nothing else to do. I live in the country and I'm a 2-3 hour walk away from town and my town doesn't even have anything I'd wanna walk that far for and my parents work a lot so they almost never have chances to give me rides anywhere. Not to mention my friends are in the same spot as me so if I wanted to hang out with them, there's nothing to do other than maybe play games.)

MMORPG's aren't my favorite genre. But I cannot wait for that DC Comics MMORPG to come out. An MMO where you can play in places like Gotham, Metropolis, and Bludhaven? I'm there!

And alternately, for the Spidey/X-Men fans, a Marvel MMO.

Keep an eye out for Carpe Diem and Nevaria as well! Nevaria has like 20+ classes and Carpe Diem has some very original ideas. Look them up because I dunno the sites. Also, Carpe Diem is Beta testing soon if you wanna sign up for that. I did.

I have been around mmorpgs for quite a while and I have seen some people do some strange things for them. But in the course of about 4/5 years of playing them it's really rare for it to happen, I have only met 2 or 3 that qualify as addiction to it and about 8 that do weird things for it (like pvping 24/7 by switching out between family members) stuff thats weird like that.

WoW is a good game though, go try the strategy games to see if the lore of it bothers you and then some people are bugged by magic. Thats the things you should be asking yourself if you dont easily become addicted to things, if thats the case I say stay away.

Also I am watching warhammer online interestedly. It may be quite good.

Hmm, so what is World of Warcraft? Chaotic Neutral?

WoW is a beefy level 60 barbarian that's dead set on eating your free time like Doritos.

Honestly, I don't think WoW is evil, I think that if you're stupid and play until you start crapping your pants in the middle of an instance or quest, and you have to heal ub3rm4g3X0r or he'll boot you from the guild. Then, I think there's an arguement for stopping YOU from playing the game, but not the normal people that still get on with their lives.

I love mmorpgs. Once I get some more money and some more harddrive space. I'll be playing WoW one day (yeehah) as for now I'm a FlyFF man. Level 58 mercenary.

I see nothing too wrong with playing an MMO for a couple hours straight. Sure it takes some self control. But the game is made to be addicting.

Evil? Um... Likely not really...

Not the best thing in the world? Yeah... I don't like MMORPGs because... Well, because games should be a brief escape, not a second life, ya know? You reach a point where it just goes too far... and that's when games really start to scare me...

Now that one is just stupid, I remeber reading an article at 1up about that game....Apparently it has call girls/clubs/naughty things (well appropriate for a non curse word thats ambigous in meaning so it can include all of whats in it). Games like that arent mmorpgs.

Games are addicting. Addiction is bondage. Bondage is sin according to the Bible. (But that's just using a snowball theory critical thinking.)

So more like games can be addicting. If not moderated, it will be addicting and eat up your life and time and energy.

Looking at the other end of the spectrum, without games, there would be no way to unwind and we'd all become workaholics. (And that also can be another addiction.)

So it's a delecate balance between work and play. Just don't play too much.

Psssh. Call girls in WoW? As a minor player, and a sibling of an avid player, I implore you, don't listen to that crap. The worst it gets is the skanky minions you can have, but to the best of my knowledge, there's nothing like THAT in the game.

To my knowledge there is no such thing in wow. And I have been playing the game for quite a while, now in that game second life or whatever its called yeah there is. That game is a peice of junk anyways.

Well... It's not hard to find a half naked dancing Night Elf chick or Human chick. Just check the starting areas. But those people are just idiots messing around and are normally guys.. Well... Most of the human and night elf females are guys anyways. Especially the Night Elves. Makes me ashamed to have a Night Elf.

By the way, anyone on the Staghelm server?

WoW is only evil if it stops you from playing Runescape. You know who you are. =B

I'm on Burning Legion (PVP) server and am a Night Elf. Haven't seen any half naked females in the starting areas. Of course being a Fighter, I find it advantageous to keep my clothes on to avoid getting killed

If you want to think that obsession = evil, then we're all participating in evil. People obsess over the opposite sex, they obsess over food, they obsess over comics, they obsess over music (I know I do), we ALL obsess over something at almost any given point. Does that mean it's evil? No. It means taking a step back from it, maybe.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with spending hours and hours and hours playing WoW. What's the difference between doing that and watching tv or daydreaming or just listening to music? If you want to be honest, most people would think all of those to be a waste of time of some sort. That's why we call them HOBBIES. A complete waste of time doing something we enjoy that doesn't require being stressed or thinking too much. The only time I can see it being harmful is when people do nothing BUT play World of Warcraft and put off family and friends.

Of course, you COULD just do like me and get your friends hooked and date someone who plays too Social time and WoW time, all in one room full of computers.

I personally feel it's neither good nor evil. If you play so much that you feel like it's wrong, then take a look at what you're lacking in your life, what you're putting on the back burner to play. But if you've got your life together and want to play a few hours every day, more power to you.

I agree with everything but the first part. I play WoW for hours and hours too, I get my friends hooked on it, and I'm dating chibiphonebooth who also plays it. And I wasn't looking at obsession on that level. I was talking about being so engrossed in the game it messes up your life. The kind of obsession I was talking about and the kind you were talking about are on two completely differant levels.
