Well, depends on how you define "destroying the world." I'd say that causing a wound so large that the planet is forced to eradicate all life on it in order to bring more spirit energy to heal the wound classifies as "destroying the world."
To me though, ultimately, his goal was to become a god. Typical egocentric bad guy, nothing original there to me.
Then there is his mysterious past with Cloud, not the typical, "we used to be rivals," or, "we used to be friends."
Eh, I dunno. I've played lots of games where the major villain didn't know the hero. Wild ARMs is a good example of this, Zeikfried didn't even know the humans going against him until about halfway through the game. *shameless Wild ARMs plug*
Cloud is hands down the top protagonist of any of the FF games.
Everyone seems to say this, but I disagree. Cloud was the whiniest, angstiest emo kid that ever lived. Heck, Cloud is like the POSTER BOY of emo kids. "Wah, I don't know who I am, nobody likes me, my life sucks." Granted, Cloud DID get better at the end of the game. I admit that. However, up until after the Lifestream, Cloud was annoying and whiny.
I much prefer Zidane from 9. I even like his character quote. "You don't need a reason to help people." Though Cecil from 4 was good too, the guy who had chosen the path of darkness and thought he was too blood-stained to be a warrior of light. I dunno. Just not Cloud (though I did like Cloud more than Squall from 8...*waits to get jumped by FF8 fans* XP).
