i get annoyed at the mindless slaughtering fps s, or levels where i can just sit there and mow a whole brigade down, but i enjoy fps s with strategic elements, such as call of duty 2.
i would second glitch's post

Well, people in real life are not even close to those in something like GTA (I know this isn't a FPS).
So I really don't have a problem with killing pixilized charecters that feel nothing, love nothing, and have absolutely no emotion. But I would never kill someone who wasn't trying to kill me or someone I loved.

I think there are a number of factors to determine whether it's bad for a particular person to play FPS. Also, the type of FPS is a factor.
There are some people that have difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality and it can be very dangerous for them. Have you heard the stories of a few cases in which people have actually gone on killing sprees, thinking they're getting points or something? Scary.
Anyway, that's an extreme case, but other people can be affected too. One factor is the addiction level. How easily does a particular person become addicted to video/computer games? If you get addicted to games and they interfere with your daily life and relationship to Jesus, you shouldn't play them.
Other than that, the lines determining whether it's alright or not get a lot more fuzzy. Trust the promptings of the Holy Spirit above all other things, including what other people say about it. If it truly feels wrong to you, then chances are it is.
For me, most of the time I can play just about any type of game without being majorly influenced by them. However, just recently I got a big influx of new games because of Christmas, my birthday and I bought 2. I played them too much and have had to make the decision not to play them for several days to catch up on schoolwork that I'd been neglecting. It wasn't that the games themselves were bad, the season just wasn't right for me to be playing them, that's all.
Dunno if that helps or not, but I'm throwing it out there in the hopes that it does.

That's all good thoughts. I suppose there's nothing inherently wrong with it.
Whenever I played Perfect Dark I could never kill enemies who surrendered.

Well, it's not the games that bug me, it's the fact that I find them fun.

It's ok to have fun in them. To me, FPS are far removed from reality.

I think a lot of it is how they effect you (as mentioned above). If you sheer enjoy ultra bloody mayhem, maybe there's a problem. But if you enjoy the strategy, the story, or the challenge, I think there usually isn't much of a concern. I enjoy FPS' with strong story or historical elements (i.e. Half Life1 and 2, System Shock 2, Call of Duty, etc), but don't enjoy FPS' where the whole point is to go around killing things, they usually bore me or disturb me.
On the whole, I personally can't play any games where I am supposed to be evil, I don't enjoy doing it and it disturbs me (for example, when I play Baldur's Gate II or Neverwinter Nights, my characters always end up being Lawful Good because I have trouble breaking the law or being evil, even in games). I think the concern comes in when you begin enjoying doing evil in games for the sheer sake of doing evil things. If you aren't doing that, you're probably fine.

It isn't any worse to play FPS's than it is to play any other action/RPG/whatever game. I've been playing them for years and haven't once wanted to go on a killing spree.
But, it depends highly on the person playing the game, and the game itself. If the game is about killing just for the sake of it, without reason, it probably isn't the best thing to be spending your precious time on. If, in the game, you are on the good side, in the army killing nazi's or other baddies, it shouldn't be a problem. I mean, killing happens. It's often necessary to kill one person to protect hundreds of others.
I also think, IMO, no person under 12 should play FPS's. Many kids under that age are simply too impressionable.
If this didn't make any sense, I'm sorry. I've never really thought about this before. And if anyone is offended or disagrees, remember, it's only one persons opinon.

First off some of my favorite games are FPS. So I am a fan.
I agree with above posters. If they make you uncomfortable, then don't play them. There are a lot of cool games that arn't FPSs. If you know better then to kill people in real life (and I am NOT saying anybody here doesn't know better) then I see no problem. I am not gonna go blow someone away, so I see no problem shooting up some baddies in Rainbow Six, Quake or Halo. I believe that it should be a matter of pesonal conviction.
Thats my two cents

There's nothing at all wrong with playing FPS. That said, if you can't play them without it bugging you, then don't. The only thing on your side that affects your righteousness is faith - everything else is already taken care of. Thus, if it negatively affects your perception of yourself, don't do it, otherwise, it's fine.

Yeah, I could never get into playing Knights of the Old Republic and choosing all the evil options to become a sith. It just didn't intrest me very much.

I'd say it depends on the game. If the whole point of the game is to do wrong(like shooting innocent people a la GTA), then yeah, I'd say that game is bad and shouldn't be played(this does not include games that allow you to make good or evil choices such as Fable and KOTOR). Remember, even if you can handle the game, you are still giving money to people who glorify wrong actions. The thing about FPSs though is that there aren't that many that glorify or wink at evil deeds. At least I can't think of any.

I think it depends on why you find it fun. Do you find it fun because you know it's a game, and that you're having a good time because of that, or is it because you enjoy the idea of killing people?
I suspect you find it fun because you know it's a game, and it helps you to relax and de-stress.
As long as it doesn't affect your view of reality or make you more susceptible to violence, I don't see a problem.

I came to another realization... you have to be mature about it. Today I saw something on TV involving kids (maybe 5 years old? 6 at tops) playing T/M rated games, and it definitly had an effect on their tempers and ability to control their actions. So, if you aren't mature enough to play the games, don't.
Yet again, that all is coming from someone who was playing Doom when he was 9... so...
