What Final Fantasy do you like best?

With a 12th game on the way in March 2006, I was wondering which ones people here like the best? I like 1, 6, 7, and 10 myself.

To be honest I'm torn between 4 and 6.
4 on one hand had a captivating story, great characters, and it was the first game in the series to introduce summons to my knowledge. Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Tellah, Kain, you remember them all, they aren't that forgetable. Plus, 5 party members in a battle!
6 however is...well...6. You just can't hate the game. From one of the most insane villains in the history of gaming to a story on par (If not better) with Chrono Trigger. Every remembers the first time they got to use Mog and his dancing abilities, you all know you squeeled with glee as you saw how much he owned (Despite him being not as good at end game...but still!). Plus, the entire WORLD of the game changed after a certain chain of events, up until 6, I don't recall any other game even attempting to do such a thing.

I've honestly never played any of the older Final Fantasies (1-7), so I'm not sure if I could make a very good decision at this point.
But I tried anyway. I voted FF9.

VII ... no X! No, I'd have to say VII, but X was really good.

Actually, I like 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10
I'm indifferent to 7 and 3
I sorta don't like X-2
I hate 1
I've never played 9, 11, or 12

VII.
Alot of people say it is overratated, but I am not familar with the fanbase. It was the RPG that got me into RPGs. Final Fantasy VIII came at a close second but lost because the first disc was boring.

*boycotts poll for not having Tactics as an option*

In the end, I chose FFX, mostly because felt the game was most balanced. Not all elements were exceptional, but all were at least acceptable. For example, I felt FFX-2 was reasonably enjoyable, but the plot was weak and it felt rather derivative.
As for the early games in the series, I'm somewhat surprised they were chosen. I mean no offense, but I strongly suspect that they were chosen solely due to nostalgia or due to hatred of new games (both of which are legitimate, given that this is a subjective poll). The early games paved the way for an industry and can be enjoyable, but in all honesty they're obsolete in many ways other than graphics (which I doubt many here care greatly about).
The "middle" games (which I'll define for the moment as FFV and FVI) are an interesting case, as many elements such as battle systems and plot are much closer to their modern equivalents. Personally, I didn't enjoy FFVI very much (the combat system was good, just not my type) and I was disappointed in the plot. FFV I cannot comment upon.
As for the recent games, they're a mixed bag (and that varies depending upon who you ask). Anything I say about them will probably only be redundant, so I'll say mostly nothing.

kaemmerite wrote:*boycotts poll for not having Tactics as an option*
The reason I chose to exclude Tactics is that it's not considered part of the main "canon." The game is too different--not to mention difficult to grasp, i'm told--to include. I know that Cloud and Aerith do show up in the game, but most fans consider it separate.
As for me, I guess I'll have to help out FF7 a little bit. Kefka was indeed a memorable villain (I've grown to HATE his laugh), but Sephiroth was the first one I actually loathed. I wanted to kill him sooo bad after he murdered Aerith.
The third game was ok, for the first one to let you use an interactive job system. The system is now kind of in the background, having been incorporated into such things as FF7's Materia system.
My only gripe at Square is why did they have to put that Sphere Grid in FFX? I can barely understand it!
Can anyone explain it to me in layman's terms?

Oh, FFVIII, by far. Haha, I know, people gripe about this game all the time, but it's one of my favorite games overall! I loved all of the characters (except Zell...he was kind of an idiot, lol), the sidequests were fun, I'm a huge fan of the Squall and Rinoa love story (haha), and I, for one, ENJOYED the Draw and Junction systems. Even though drawing 100 of every magic attack was a little on the lengthy side, it was SO, so helpful in the long run. And, while the Junction system took me a few months to get used to, I wouldn't play it any other way. The Junction system was great, in my opinion. I mean, you could be nearly invincible with the right magic and weapons equipped!
Anyways, FFVIII is DEFINITELY my favorite Final Fantasy game, followed closely by VII and IV. I still need to finish VI, haha, and...X just wasn't my favorite, even though it had some cool characters. VIII! VIII!

Zell DINCHT is the sickest character ever. An idiotic character is what the series needed. Up until VII everyone was wicked serious the whole time. The series needed a jester to keep the feeling alive. Without Zell there would be no FFVIII.
You see as we all know FFVIII has a cast of "Dawson`s Creek"-like characters. Everyone has a different personality. We`ve got Squall.
Squall: SHUT UP AND LEAVE ME ALONE!
Zell: Check out my T.Board, dude! SHWAW!
Rinoa: I love everything. I love my life. I love beetles. Life is good.
Selphie: I LIKE TRAINS!!!!!!!
Quistis: I like Squall and I memorized his peronality.......and I`m serious.
Irvin: I love dee ladies. I`m also a selfish romantic jerk.
There you go. Without joker there would be no FFVIII cast.
ANYWAYS....
As for the earler FF games, they were remarkable for the time. But now, they are just outdated. The plot is painfully boring for all of them other than IV. IV is good.
I would actually count IV as a middle and V as an oldie.
I don`t care what order they were made. V is more old fashioned.
VI issued the turning point of the series, but I`m sorry Ryan. FFX-2 IMO was better than 6. However, the new GBA version, may change my mind.

Whatever, Tom. Like I said, it's MY OWN OPINION. It's your own imagination that thinks I don't like Zell because he's in your username. Geez. I played and beat FF8 long before I even KNEW about you, so whatever. I like Final Fantasy VIII, so what? It's not your place to come along and tell me I'm wrong, simply because YOU have a different opinion. That's right, OPINION. It's based on your own PERSONAL likes and dislikes. I think FF8 would be fine withOUT Zell, you think he's one of the better characters. Hence, OPINION. Don't even try to chew me out just because I have different tastes.
Now, this ends here. Feel free if you want to continue this with a PM. I'm not about to get this thread closed on account of someone else's opinion.

I've played FFI and FFII (Dawn of Souls) and FFX. I voted for FFX. What I don't understand is why Square Enix would make FFIII for the DS and make FFIV, FFV, and FFVI for the GBA (I read in Nintendo Power that they're working on porting FFV and FFVI to GBA). Then again, I don't own a DS, though I do want to get one in the near future.

FFIII I believe is going to be completely redone in 3-D for the DS, or something similar to it.

ROFL! OH man you're funny
lol Wow... I am speechless.
Up until VII everyone was wicked serious the whole time.
you're wrong there....
1. So I guess all the Moogles, Gogo, Umaru, Ultros, and Kefka were all serious eh? I guess you haven't played ff6 enough eh. Because no enemy is insane as Kefka.
I will argue with you that SEPHIROTH is wicked serious the whole time. He's all "Oh im sephiroth! I'm evil! Pity me because I was just some experiment! oh la la! I am so serious, feel sorry for me!" While kefka was just.... himself, nobody felt sorry for him, everybody laughed at him. He was insane
2. FFIV has the "you spoony bard", that alone makes people not serious. And you have Palom and Porom, who were comedic relief
I corrected you again sir

Even though you told me to PM I`m going to just say this.
Find this comment: You must hate Zell because he`s in my username.
I bolded "Dincht" to prove the point that I like him not that you don`t like me.
Ryan, I never said they were completely serious I said "too" serious. Oh wait, Spoony Bard kept me laughing for about 5 hours. Oh and saying "Kupo" all the time calms my nervers.
IMO, Zell was the first to be funny. Wait, Radical Dreamer was right that he was an idiot. Not a tame Idiot, but he is good. Narf, Narf.
What I`m saying is what I just said is IMO!!! That entire post. It`s what I think.
EDIT: I got about 3/4ths done with FFVI and then i realized I had alot of other RPGs I could play that I liked better.

wow tom, thats ludicrous
TOM, she doesn't like Zell because she finds him annoying. THAT IS ALL. You may perceive him differently and enjoy his comedic relief, but she obviously did not. You are in no position to change her mind on that. Just drop the subject already.

As a moderator I can't demand that bickering about video games stop, but I would like everyone to take a step back and look carefully at what they intend to post before doing so.
Mithrandir wrote:Hmm. No one looking at 10-2, I see.
I am actually in the middle of playing it now, which means my former comment about its plot could be invalidated when I am completely blown away by the depth and quality of the latter part... but I doubt it. Most likely I'll finish it while I still have time (read as: before college starts again).
rocklobster wrote:My only gripe at Square is why did they have to put that Sphere Grid in FFX? I can barely understand it! Can anyone explain it to me in layman's terms?
Really? I thought it was a decent system of advancement.
Layman's explanation: You can upgrade your stats by using spheres earned from enemies at specific nodes. The enemies also give you AP so that you can move between nodes (how considerate of them). That is the basic premise.
Tom Dincht wrote:VI issued the turning point of the series, but I`m sorry Ryan. FFX-2 IMO was better than 6.
I wonder which required more new programming? (Not really, but...)
CookinLikeSanji wrote:Then I got the information I needed to know.
Though I doubt the ending would change anyone's mind. It is actually my primary disappointment with the storyline of that game.

I rather doubt either villain was meant to be comic. Personally, I didn't care about Kefka until I saw his battle sprite, which annoyed me. That is essentially the only impact he made on me as a villain.
