I know they had a separate composer other than Nobuo Uematsu (which made me sad before I even heard the music) but there were some basic elements of FF music missing. Like, a FF game is just not a FF game without the "Prelude." And after every battle, you really want to hear that familiar nine-note victory sound off. And the chocobo music is always unmistakable.
But no, they felt the need to make FFX-2 all retro. Even the battle music. How ... nice of them.
I totally agree! I've heard a handful of music from the FFX-2 soundtrack and was absolutely NOT impressed. I suppose it would make me sound a bit picky, but honestly, I find the tracks hardly bareable... if not downright annoying. It is most certainly not fantasy in any manner... as you mentioned above, the basic feel of continuity is missing. Just another reason that persuades me to keep far, far away.
On a happier note... I find that the soundtracks from FF Crystal Chronicles and FFXI seem to have some good tracks. Maybe that'll help ease your disappointment some?
